Posts: 43 03/13/2009 10:55	Tags : None Last night, at our club's fly tying night, a new member brought in a spey rod which had this information on the rod and bag. The rod was labeled "The Hunter" 14ft, Hollow Built. There was also a decal on the rod as well as a label on the rod bag that said "R. Chapman & Co.", Ware, Herts, England. The rod was three sections. The butt and mid were 5 feet long and the tip section was 4 feet long. It was missing one guide on the mid section and one was bent. These were very tall guides and I suspect hard to find. There was a piece of cork missing from the very long handle and it appeared that the cork was like a sheet wrapped around the butt section. Other than that, the rod appeared to be in good shape. Nice black wraps and a golden color bamboo. The fellow wondered if it could be repaired and if it was worth $300 that the owner was asking of him if he bought it. Sorry I do not have a photo of the rod as I didn't have my camera with me. Can anyone tell me something about the rod, the company, and the value from this description. Thanks. Dean

Posts: 167 03/13/2009 11:44	Dean, The Chapman 'Hunter' is a rod built for trotting a float & bait (using a centrepin 'Aerial' type reel) down river for our British 'coarse' (not game) fish...not a Spey/fly rod. The rings are 'High Bells Life', intended to keep monofilament line away from a wet rod (it sticks and won't run out freely). Hollow built because holding a 14' rod all day long is knackering! Replacement rings can be had from Hopkins & Holloway, http://www.hopkinsholloway.co.uk/products.php?SID=1&CatID=16 ....Pattern 617C. Probably worth between £100-150 sterling, if in good nick (over here, if it's in the States and not a fly rod (which it's not!)) have no idea what it would go for over there! Chapmans are still in business! ( http://www.chapmanblanks.co.uk/ ) Sheet cork handles are a beast to repair....board member Oddsnrods has a Canadian supplier and it may be worth pm'ing him.... Posts: 2807 03/13/2009 12:41 Immoderatus Britannicus	Basically a 'ditto' on what Stuart already posted. If ever you should try to 'cast before you buy' this would be it - the thought of anyone trying to spey cast with this rod sends me into a fit of giggles - it could be why British rods have such a diverse reputation over there - you guys are trying to fly fish with our 'bait' rods Value wise - with the work I think $150-200 is generous. BTW the reason for the long handle is to mount the reel towards the front and tuck the butt under your arm to control the rod length
