No... not yet... But I've read several times it's one of the best rods of all times, one of those magic tapers, - which probably explains the prices
they reach !

I've got a 7',2/1 that I fish semi regularly. Interesting history to the rod, was formerly owned by the Chairman of the Board, Tappan stove Co.,
Richard Tappan, bought it from him personally.
Anyhow, I use a DT5 Sylk on it and occasionally luck out and catch a fish. Life is good. R |

Janot:
I just picked one up yesterday as a matter of fact (see last page of "Got a new rod lately?" for details and pictures). I cannot attest to it's fishing characteristics yet but i have found it to be a very powerful, fast-action rod in my lawn casting. Mine dates to 1959 and is a 7'6" 2/2 w/ blond cane, gold wraps, and no intermediates. It is also marked "Special" which i have not yet found much info about or references to online. Most CC de France rods seem to be 7' and 8' with a few 6'6" rods floating around. Like Ron, I've decided on a DT5 to balance mine out... Good luck in your search if you plan to find one. I think they're a highly attractive rod and have a neat history. -matt |

Here's one that I sold to another member here...this one is/was a 6'10", 2/1. I believe that I fished a DT4 on it. Maybe back in the "in
action" thread. BTW, the reel is an Orvis (Farlow) Flyweight that came with the 7'er mentioned above.

hookjaw23 wrote:Interesting to hear about your 7½-footer. A friend of mine also has a 7½' CC de F, a length which I have to date not found in any Hardy catalogs. The word "Special" is probably the reason for this. My friends rod has traditional crimson wraps without intermediates. It is a great casting machine with an action I'd describe as "almost too fast to be comfortable". Here is a link to our Finnish bamboo site and photos & measured taper of the rod: http://www.bamburakentaja.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=228 Lockfast |

Janot,
In 1998, on the 125th anniversary of Hardy, they built 3 special edition bamboo rods (for the USA market) -- all based on the CC de France taper. Two 4 wts, 6' and 6'10" and a 5 wt 7'2". Dennis

Lockfast,
Interesting and thanks so much for the link... i also haven't found a mention of a 7'6" rod in any Hardy literature.... that rod looks great w/ the crimson wraps. If you checked out the pics of mine, its a very similar looking rod minus a few details... I looked up the serial number of your friend's rod and it was built in 1961 or 1962... the last years of the original CC de France i believe. Do you know if the tip tops are original or replacements? (mine are agate) I too would also classify the action as very fast... i haven't tried mine w/ a 6wt yet but that may help slow it up alittle... fishing it will of course reveal how well it casts. In the yard though its a cannon. A friend of mine who is a Hardy fan said that sometimes they would add "Special" when they built an off-production rod, usually in a different length. Regardless, it's neat finding out the history of these older rods. -matt |

A few years back, I owned a 6'10"(Generally called the 7') with intermediates, built in '59, and a 7 1/2' without intermediates, built in
'60. Both came from the same owner, purchased new here in the states. Both were fast rods which would cast a 6wt nicely. Here's the 7 1/2' footer.

Do you know if the tip tops are original or replacements? (mine are agate)Hi Matt, Hard to say, really. Hardy used nomally agate (or agatine) tiptops at that time, but it may be possibe that the rod has been ordered with perfection type tiptops. This rod was originally ordered to the States, which might be the reason for this special wish. They do seem original - or they have been replaced very neatly. Anssi |
