Posts: 54 03/23/2009 22:30	Tags : None Well, you may not believe it but The Browning Black Canyon is a much better reel than its been given lip service to on the web. The distributor unfortunately has the B word in its name so, it hasn't really been taken seriously by dyed in the wool salmonid and selected salt species fly rodders. But, Browning has a long history of producing good tackle, though, intermittently. I was looking for a reel that fancied being framed by cane and stumbled upon a BC3 about a year and a half ago. Nice finish, good machining, tight tolerances (don't believe everything you hear on the other "boards"). I've caught a number of 14 3/4+ to 17+ inch browns on it and never had to increase the drag (well, there was that one time I put new line on it and forgot to reset the drag from zip). In fact, I've had to back off to avoid breaking off fish but, never felt in need of more. And it is smooth, not erratic. I wouldn't choose it for fishing species I might use 20lb shock or metal tippet for but have Orvis, Ross, STH, FinNor, Teton and Pate reels for that. I would put the Black Canyon up against both my Hardy Marquis' and H-Bros. made Battenkill, however. In fact, would probably have more faith in it - so much so that I went out and purchased the smallest in the series, a BC1, which BTW does have disc drag and is not limited, as stated elsewhere on the web, to a click pawl alone. This reel looks GREAT on a cane rod! It is highly fishable, and will probably be sought after in the collectibles market sometime in the not too distant future. I have no connection with Browning or its distributor; just wanted to set the record straight and tip my fellow board members off to a reel bargain. Last Edited By: cyangler 03/24/2009 23:37. Posts: 1 03/24/2009 00:53	I have a Browning Waterton that I use on Salmon when it is nasty out. Indestructible sealed design and a wonderful drag. I have stopped + 20lb fish fresh from the salt. Very underrated and impossible to find used.

Posts: 55 03/24/2009 03:48	Wilfred, just google Browning Black Canyon Fly Reel. Flyman (you are a fly on the wall aren't you - where'd you go?) putting it in the reel section was my first thought. But, figured it made more sense to put the BC in 'fishing' at this point - as I wouldn't consider it a classic, yet. One, however, can't fish a classic rod without a reel, unless one is Lee Wulff and bold enough to fish for salmon with a fairie rod. Though, the Waterton may be considered, by some, a classic. I am glad it was brought into the discussion to reinforce the point that Browning has introduced some notable equipment over the years, though reluctant to share much in the way of history concerning their involvement re., the angling tradition. Too much gun for the game. Let us in on their other contributions, like fine glass rods and what not I say. Let's hear a shout out from the Browning bunch. The information and word of mouth is out there... - so, why - so low key?? The Black Canyon is classic in design. So, perhaps you are correct in placing it along side contemporary Hardys the same way Peerless are placed along side Wm. Mills or vom Hofe. As not yet in the Bogdan arena, I thought it more pertinent to 'fishing' than collectibles at this point. But, the classic reel topic section is a bit muddied as will be the creeks shortly, and you may be correct in redirecting the conversation, though I stand by it being better suited to a discussion of fishing classic rods for now. Posts: 2 03/24/2009 17:59	The Waterton I have is a 78. It says USA on the back so I assume it was made in the USA. It is a small, 3 1/8", wide, 1 1/2", reel. Still holds a 8 wt. sink tip and 100 yards of backing. Black. What is nice is the drag. a large enough knob to grab with cold fingers or even gloves and a drag that is smooth to tighten up and can really be screwed down if needed. I would love to have another in a 56. Finn

Posts: 57 03/25/2009 18:28	The price seems pretty consistent with those reels. It was originally selling, if I recall correctly, $99 for the BC1, and $109 for the BC2 and BC3. The disc is remarkably strong for a drag system that is virtually undetectable visually on casual inspection. Certainly strong enough for the type of fishing that one would typically use such a light reel for. Anyway, for the price... they had dropped it down to $79 for the 1, and $89 for the 2 &3. Now, they are selling them for $69 - all three models. And, they have spare spools for, I think, $29. The other thing that I forgot to mention besides it looking great on a cane rod is that it fits many sliding band seats that I have better than my BBS II, STH 234 (original, not cassette version), or Teton Trinity, model 2. One thing I noticed is that the one pictured above has lightening holes on the frame side. Mine is undrilled, sort of resembles a old Uniqua or somewhere in between that and a Prince (I had a 7/8 - before they came out with the golden, some years back - nice light reel but a bit too much so for the fishing I had in mind using it for).
