Reel for a 4wt. |
Lead | ||
|
I'm considering a reel for a 4wt rod I've yet to acquire. I have in mind (not yet ready to buy) a J. W. Young. I'd appreciate models and price
estimations. Other than a few pictures, I know nothing of their reels.

I think we need more information, specifically rod length.....If the rod is 8' to 8-1/2', then a Dingley 3" Perfect or Hardy 3-1/8" Perfect.
If the rod is 7-1/2', then an Orvis CFO III.....JW Young in 3-1/4" is my best guesstimate with the information provided.

If it doesn't have to be a classic, look for a nice Battenkill 5/6 or a Scientific Anglers System 1 456 - Click pawl reels.
They balance out a rod that length nicely

Andy -- On a 7' 4wt rod, I like a reel diameter under 3" because I think it looks proportional to rod length -- but that's just personal taste.
If that doesn't matter to you, almost any reel will work as long as it's not too heavy and the foot fits. If you want a vintage reel, a 2 7/8"
Hardy Uniqua from the 30's is a great quality reel and can be tweeked to be used LHW or used RHW if you prefer that. They have a bit of heft to balance
bamboo and can be bought for around $300. I don't think balance is particularly important on a 7' rod because it's so light anyway so another reel
I really like for a 7' 4wt. is the Hardy Featherweight (middle brother of the LRH series). This is a lighter reel than the Uniqua and can be found used
for $200 - $250. There are a number of clones of this reel that are very good quality and run less than $100 -- like the vintage Heddon 300 series. Good
luck!

The Featherweight and Uniqua are both good suggestions.
