Posts: 2 03/29/2009 18:49	Tags : None Based on gofish60's comments to my question in the collecting forum and what I could find on the web, I stopped back and with a little dealing brought home the Heddon rod. The varnish is in great shape just a couple nicks that to not go into the fibers. I have a incorrect tiptop to replace, hopefully it was glued correctly. And a little set to take out of the tips, suggestions there would be welcomed. And most importantly a guide foot to rewrap. The rod wears varigated thread, it looks to be olive and black, although I suppose it could be something else colored by the varnish. Does any one make a thread that matches the Heddon colors? One last thing, there is no cap to the tube, and no threads, was the Heddon cap a press fit or some internal clamp? if some has a picture of a oringinal I would appreciate it. again - know its not a high end rod, but I hope it will be fun to play with until my own cane building attempts begin - here are a few pics - any thoughts. Posts: 2797 03/29/2009 19:14 Moderator	What a nice little rod! You will have more darn fun with that than a gopher in soft dirt! The thread is likely black/white jasper, although some seem to be blue/white (which is probably faded black/white). Not uncommon, but if you can't find any, I can give you enough to wrap a couple of guides. Getting a good color match is kind of tough as the aged varnish on the other guides will tint the color of the originals. But you will at least be in the right ballpark. While removing sets is not rocket science, it's worth doing a some practice on a tip section of something which has little value. Too much heat in the wrong place can have undesired consequences. You might want some help with that from someone who has done it before. The 3/4 Ferrule indicates that the rod will use a 4 or 5 weight line. Personally I prefer a 5 with that rod.

Posts: 3163 03/29/2009 19:56	I agree with Drew (tedgolden), you have a very nice find! Some of the #10 Heddons used gold/black varigated jasper thread. I believe some pretty close thread is still available from Gudebrod. Properly applied with color preserver and varnished it will look very similar to the original wraps. The 7'6" Featherweight is a wonderfully fishable rod, even today, and an excellent start to your bamboo fishing career. Congratulations! Flyman

Posts: 458 03/30/2009 17:30	Vintage, useable, 7-1/2 ft 4/5wt rods, for the price you paid, are rare as hens teeth. Very nice find. I might suggest taking a razor or exacto and carefully cutting off the thread on one side of the guide that is unravelling anyway, and looking underneath, to see what color the thread originally was. From there, someone on the board can probably steer you to a source for a replacement. A little work and you'll have a very nice fly rod. Lee
