Being some what ham fisted and using it infrequently, I was having a little trouble with my "lil' giant rougher", (a great machine,
beautifully made, and the guys are really helpful). However in reality it may have been too much machine for me at my novice level (I am an accountant with no
training with tools or artisinal skilles of any sort - ever). Also my splitting is not great and I end up with strips of varying widths which required
continuous fiddling of the feeder bars - also not my strength. My biggest problem was keeping the strips straight and centered in the first few passes, the
resulting wobbles and off-centering chewing up masses of bamboo into slivers, "snake" strips" or horrible lopsided things. However, having sold
my little yacht, I had some spare bits left, and in particular a pair of "cam cleats" seemed to offer a solution. Inverted and bolted to the feed
bed on the centre line with the "V" slot on the bottom, I can now feed in strips of all sizes keeping them centred no matter how odd the strip starts
out, and I end up with many more workable strips as I trim them down. My only trouble now is over confidence and taking the strips too close to their finished
dimension. If anyone else suffers from the same issues I am sure a better handiman can use this principal, without the expense of buying the cleats, to make
a great tool even more user friendly. Well it worked for me!
