Anyone know Orvis "classic" spinning reels? |

I have seen the Orvis spinning reel models marked in quite a few different ways and I can't tell what the differences are. They all look the same to me.
For example size 100 are found marked 100, 100A, 100S, 100SS. Other models like the 75 and 150 are also marked with various letter codes. Anyone know what
these letter designations mean and what the differences are in size or capacity within like model numbers ?
Thanks |

The reels were made by the Italian company Zangi for Orvis, Ted Williams and Abu.
50A was an ultralight modle and an odd number i.e 51,101,151 denoted left hand wind. S was for Salt water and SS high speed salt water |

I forgot that in later years they were made by another Italian company Coptes.
There is a great book Mulinelli da Pesca Italiana, great reading as it has lots of pictures and even I can understand the rating system. comune, non comune, raro, molto raro, raissimo. When I was selling reference books many years ago I did stock it but I don't know where to get it from these days. |

Do you know what the difference between a 100 and 100A is?

Here's the catalog copy from 1978. It might help with details about each model offered at that time. For a few years in the mid-'70s there was also
a "manual" 50A that had no bail...the fisherman used his index finger to manipulate line on and off the roller. 1984 was the last year these reels
were cataloged.
