nice! what fly did you catch him on? veli autti fluttering cdc-stone???No, that one took a Klinkhåmer-style imitation of a hatching stonefly. CDC-patterns did however give me a few fish later in the afternoon and on the next day. My best fish for the weekend was 21" dark male (fine fish for sure but not as pretty as the smaller ones) which I caught on the next day and which also took a Klinkhåmer: Lockfast |

woaaaah, SUPER NICE fish. is that private water or can the plebs access this stream? I've been toying with the idea of an early season trip to finnland for
a looooong time, ever since I read oliver edwards' article about the spring stonefly fishing in ff&ft some years ago...

SUPER NICE fish Amen to that - pity about the snow still on the ground though, my early season exploits have been a disaster, for the first time in years of being almost flooded out now we have almost no water and very few fish to be seen

I've been toying with the idea of an early season trip to finnland for a looooong time, ever since I read oliver edwards' article about the spring stonefly fishing in ff&ft some years ago... Water is not private - but in a way might as well be. These fish were caught from Läsäkoski-river (right - don't even try to pronounce it) in Central Finland. The river is a short one and has only about one mile of fishable water, there is a rod limit (6 rods) and river is very heavily booked - they don't take reservations before the day when the phone booking begins and practically the whole season is usually sold during the first hours in the morning of that day. This is a C&R fishery with no stocked trout and the price is very reasonable. The river has lots of wild fish, quite a few in the +20" class (during 2008 the river gave 296 brown trout over 50 cm - about 20") and the habitat is perfect for this particular species of stonefly which in turn means that the hatches are heavy. Hitting the hatch at its best is naturally quite fickle business. I've had foreign visitors fishing this hatch for a couple of times. On both occassions the weather was a bit too cold. Some flies hatched, a few fish were caught and we had a good time. Ok fishing, but far from what it can be when you hit it just right. The best part of the experience is (at least for me) always the same: The possibility of casting a dry fly to steady risers which rise to naturals and artificials between chunks of ice while the snow is still on the ground. Even though I have enjoyed this fishing for years and years it still is a kind of a miracle and very exotic. There are many good rivers for February Red fishing in Finland. Some are usually at their best during the latter part of March, some during the first half of April. If you are serious about taking a chance with our Finnish spring weather and decide to come over, I'll be happy to advise and assist you in any way I can. I'd gladly, gladly... trade prettiness for that much meat, anyday Lockfast. Thank you Jeremy. I wish you a great season as well! Lockfast
