Posts: 115 05/02/2009 17:28	Tags : None just got back from the trout & salmon sponsored "tweed fair" , it was a bit disappointing cos there was nothing for my kids to do , i thought there might be a bouncy castle or trampolines or some bloody thing , what under 5,s want to see fly tying or casting competitions, i ended up taking them to edinburgh zoo . i did however manage to find this J.B. moscrop manchester reel , its all brass , solid milled frame , spool mounted tension , 4.5" dia.. horn handle etc , i been looking for a good example of this reel 4 ages , ok its not the greatest reel in the world but its one of those reels that every collector must have at least one of , this is a great example in a1 condition , it will go on a ron thompson rod (£60) loaded with a john noriss budget sink tip (£7) i will splash out a few quid on a maxima leader and use one of my own flys , and i will get more fish than those most of the guys i met today who have over £1500 of loop/hardy/sage etc gear , let the good times roll , i reserve the right to withdraw this post once i sober up in the morning.. Posts: 345 05/02/2009 23:04	good topic, nackymoo. There are rivers and streams that only require a roll cast or some such to catch good fish. I have recently seen casters tossing the line well over a hundred feet. Try hooking a fish at that distance. Cheers on ya!

Posts: 117 05/03/2009 06:11	and another thing , i could cast like superman too if i had the wind at my back , 18ft rod , no trees around me and if i was casting on to dry grass , but why would i want to..unless i was fishing for rabbits!! i dont do much spey casting anyway , i find it causes too much splashing in the water , i like to use overhead cast and tweek my fly right in , and i cant spey with a short sink tip line too easy , i do use the spey when it is necessary , not very often though , sometimes i use both , a small spey then an overhead to land the fly exactly where i want , i did say i am not the most elegant of casters , thankfully i couldnt care less. on a final note though it is quite a pleasure watching someone doing 55yards with rios or mach II shooting heads....very impressive , i couldnt get 55yards ..no way , my sink tip is only 35 yards long anyway....

Posts: 394 05/03/2009 06:27	Interesting topic. Let's be careful not to put everyone who loves certain brands of fishing gear in the same "tweedy posers" category. I myself fish hard and with greater patience than I could ever have in "real" life. When I'm fishing I really couldn't care less about which brand name is on my rod or reel, providing it works like it should. In the "flow" of fishing the line, the fly and the possibility of fish is all that matters. But there's a lot of good gear around, so personal taste is simply a factor when spending your hard earned cash. I regularly meet people on the waterside who practise the art of "reverse snobbery". They see me fishing my Hardys and make a major point of telling me that their gear is much less expensive and they also catch their fish. Probably true, but what's the point exactly? Who's better, who's right here? I choose to drive an old car until it dies, others buy a new one every two years. It's a matter of choice, taste, different strokes for different folks and in the end that makes life just a bit more interesting! Wilfred de Bruijn The Lowlands Of Holland
