Best buggy hare's mask? |
Lead | ||
|
Can anyone suggest a source of very buggy hare's masks for tying spiky nymphs and mixing into various dubbing mixes? Many of the masks I have obtained or
have seen locally have more soft fur that really does not give the spikey effect I am looking for - any tips appreciated!. Maybe its the particular species of
rabbit or where they are harvested from?
Thanks! |

I got a very good mask recently from Great Feathers (http://greatfeathers.com). Two other good reliable sources
are Blue Ribbon Flies (http://www.blueribbonflies.com/), and Charlie's Fly Box (http://www.charliesflybox.com/). Irrespective of which source you choose, I recommend a phone call before placing
the order to outline exactly what you're seeking. FWIW, I've found the best spiky/rough dubbing comes from the area right at the top of the skull
between the ears.

For spikier dubbing, I'd buy a squirrel skin. All but the belly portion has more hair than fur, so is great for mixing with hare's ear or other dubbing
to make very buggy dubbing. Get red squirrel for the browner tones or gray for the grayer tones and mix with whatever dubbing you want to enhance. You can also
buy premixed squirrel-based dubbing .

I'll second squirrel as an option. I've started substituting natural fox squirrel for hares mask, and I like the results.

I love squirrel too, like 16 pmd said, red and gray are great. Another option if you want the "hares ear" color, is a coyote mask. They are cheap,
have alot more hair, and the stuff around the nose and eyes is real spikey. CJ

The best spikey Hairs fur comes from the body just remove the underfur.
