Advice for a First-Time Custom Bamboo Rod Buyer?

Posts: 7 10/17/2009 17:28	I've only been fishing bamboo for a year or so. But, one thing I've learned, is that there are more people out there dealing with cane than you realize. Look for someone local! if you can find a local builder, or better yet, some one who restores rods you've won a battle.

Posts: 39 11/16/2009 07:51	Buying a cane rod should not be like buying a car where you lose 25% driving off the lot. There are only a few Rodmakers today that make rods that hold most of their value when resold on the used market, some actually increase in value. I would research that and buy only from them or buy a used rod from a reputable dealer. Their is no sense buying a new rod for $1800 and selling it a year later for $900. Better to buy a used rod for $900 and selling it a year later for $800.

Posts: 4 11/24/2009 22:23	Of course there is never only one rod. For a first custom I think a special occasion rod is called for. Like the rod for the 10%, the get away small stream rod maybe or the show and tell rod on the bigger water perhaps. Then one finds that they look for these occasions and when the rod is pulled out and used where it is perhaps inappropriate, then it's time for another, etc.... There is never only one, so go for the special occasion rod as the first. M Grallert

I have bought many used rods and have yet to buy from a dealer. If a used rod costs $800.00 here it will be 20% higher when buying it from a dealer or a $1000.00. I don't begrudge dealers making money, that's what their in business for. I sell that $1000.00 dollar rod here without the 20% (dealer preminum) tacked on I automatically lose $200.00. If I use rod for two years and sell it for $100.00 less than I paid for it I'm ok with that but not $300.00. Actually as you know here in the Mid- Atlantic states we have a core of about 10 people from this board where most of my rod purchases or trades come from. Rolf and I seem to just switch rods every other day. Other than that I buy from the builder including you. All this siaad if Ron or Carmine had a rod at the show I would probably buy it but it would be one I would have to consider keeping because of the dealer premium. I might pay a little more for the convienence of taking it home right there and casting it rather than worrying about mailing it back. (I hate the whole process of packing up and mailing rods). In short I don't think you need to buy a used rod from a dealer but have no prblem with it if you choose to.

If for example I bought a (insert name here) rod here the price would be set at approximately $800.00 or so. Most dealers would sell that same rod for anywhere from $950.00 to 1150.00. Again, I don't begrudge them...they need to have a significant margin to stay in business. I can be wrong about this but my experiences around bamboo rods for the past 30 years or so have helped me form this belief. In short I see dealers prices up over secondary market (private transactions) buy usually 15 to 20%. If I pay a dealer$1150.00 for a rod I can only get $950.00 for in a private sale I would lose $200.00. Hope all that makes sense. Last Edited By: andre49 12/06/2009 11:55. Edited 1 time.

And just trying to list the first-rate rodmakers in Oregon who contribute to this board, one will almost certainly omit someone he should have included. Leaping immediately to mind are A. J. Thramer, Stephen Kiley, Mike Brooks, Chris McDowell . . . (The marks of ellipsis are to say, "And others, probably many others. But that's the way it is when you're asking names to leap into a septuagenarian mind. You'd be better off asking your 'trained' canary to roll over"). Joe also discusses several from your state who restore rods. So you're well located for a good start in bamboo with all sorts of excellent help right in the neighborhood. Going local to buy bamboo fly rods doesn't work as well for some of us--South Dakotans, for instance. But with homework, occasional mistakes, a few great finds, and loads of fun in the process, we still do okay. And you can count on one hand things as satisfying as doing okay with a bamboo fly rod.

My question is more along these lines (and if we're getting far from the thread's intent, the moderators can certainly move this or curtail it): Other than for a financial hardship or unforeseen emergency of some sort - which, unfortunately, too many people have had to endure recently - why would you otherwise knowingly put yourself in a position where you need to sell a rod for 20% less than you paid for it, here or elsewhere? So... I guess what I'm saying is that I understand why prices for a used rod "here" are less than they would be from a dealer, but I don't understand why a seller would let that happen to himself. Boils down to Mike Clark for me. Of course he's not taking orders, which is just as well. Couldn't afford it anyway, but it sure would be fun to work with him on what I would want in a custom rod.
