I sure wish Kyle Drury was still making rods,i owned a few and talk about "Bang for the Buck"they were downright steals,really nice tapers and fit
and finish were pretty good.Jeff Watt from California made one hell of a nice hex top tier all the way not sure what happened to him either.

I am not a collector; I fish the rods I have. Let me hasten to say I'm not against that; just that I tend to view fly rods as "working art."
Having said that, I have a number of fly rods that I fish all the time and I love to use them but I figure they are all for sale to the right person or to swap
for another rod - except my Dave Norling rods. These rods will be in my possession, hopefully in my hands, when "my name is called up yonder..."
The fit and finish is first rate and they nearly cast themselves plus I really like his philosophy on rod building. He only builds rods he fishes and
doesn't treat them as museum pieces - he calls them "fish poles." I have cast a LOT of fly rods in the past few years (making up for lost time)
and I find his to be right up there with the very best I've personally cast.

fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman."

Jack Howell's Rods | #44 | ||

Having known Jack, I doubt he made even 80 for sale as he was such a perfectionist. It's too bad he got out of the game, but life moves on for all of us.
Here's a photos of my fraternal triplets made by Jack. They're beautiful to fish as well as to admire.

Montagne quad | #47 | ||

Did anyone on the forum happen to be the buyer of the 8-foot Montagne quad recently advertised on an internet auction site?
It looked great but was sans original bag and tube. Nevertheless, a timeless work of art! Would appreciate a report on its casting characteristics. TIA! Best regards,

Flyman615 wrote: The Montagne Quad arrived today but I haven't had a chance to throw any line with it. It actually turned out to be an 8 1/2 foot rod instead of an 8 footer, which is fine by me as it appears to be a pretty stout rod (it certainly looks like it could throw an 8wt line as described) and I think the extra length is a bit more versatile. Condition is excellent plus and looks to hardly ever been fished (clean, smooth cork, no casting fractures on any wraps, no line whisper marks, etc.). The rod itself is very striking with the hollow male ferrules, rectangular blank construction, ferrule mounted guide, skeleton reel seat and extension butt. The varnish, cork and wrapping work is very nice and the fit and finish of the glued blank is impressive. Just from putting the rod together and wiggling it a bit, it appears to be a very fast actioned rod with the bend coming from close to the rod tip. I'll post pics and a casting report after I line the rod (hopefully this weekend on some Texas largemouths).

I would add Bill Oyster to this discussion. You rarely if ever see one of his rod's up for sale on the secondary market, especially the engraved ones.

Dave Kenney rods | #52 | ||

I see people asking for them from time to time but have never seen a Dave Kenney rod up for sale at second hand. I have three and know I would never part with
any of them.

Although he seems to have a pretty high output, you also never see any L.C. (Lew) Parks rods on the secundary market. Tells you something. I know I love my
7612 and will not part with it.

Re-visiting this thread this morning and was amazed that no one has mentioned Mike Clark of South Creek Ltd.
I can't remember seeing one of his rods up for sale in a very long time. His rods are most coveted and mostly custom as to the buyers choice of wraps, reel seat, etc. A testament to his rods is that at this point in time he is not taking new orders as he has such a large backlog. I'm sure most members know this, but I felt he most assuredly deserved mentioning as a modern maker whose rods are seldomly seen on the secondary market. Bob Go Heels!!! |

We have now listed almost every maker out there.
Just looking at the last couple examples........... Chris McDowell- makes an amazing rod, but only has around 250 rods completed so I would say his rods pop up for sale at a normal rate relative to how many there are in existence. Dave Kenny (who?)- I only hear about his rods when folks whom own them are praising them Lew Parks- he sells rods over ebay and the rods I have seen on the secondary only fetch about 1/2 their original price (then why sell ? I'm sure they are fine rods). Bill Oyster- pretty new on the scene and I imagine has few rods (in comparison to some) in the marketplace (especially his engraved ones as someone mentioned). Mike Clark- there is one on Rick's site that has been there for several months, although he may be one of the better examples of high output vs low occurrence in the secondary. I think I just proved to myself that this thread doesn't mean anything except that folks who don't make a lot of rods don't have a lot of rods on the secondary market (surprise!), makers with low resale value don't make it to the secondary market that often (surprise!), and lastly...... there are just a few makers that have high output that don't make it the secondary market and those folks are obvious (Brandin, Carpenter, etc.) and even those make it occasionally simply because there are plenty of them out there. Dave Kenney rods | #57 | ||
|
If you don't know Dave Kenney rods, then I recommend you give him a call and test one out if possible. I'm lucky enough to live an hour from
Dave's shop. He has some great tapers--his 8' 5wts in 2 and 3pc are amazing and his cane and finish work is some of the best I have ever seen from any
maker of any era. www.dkenneyflyrods.com Dave has been making rods for years and puts out 30-40 rods per year,
more in recent years as his waiting list grows. I doubt I would have any problem selling a Kenney rod at a small discount to retail if well used, or a premium
if unused. His new ferrule material is outta sight. It is absolutely mind boggling that Dave charges as little as he does--visit him sometime and I promise
you'll feel guilty. On top of this, Dave has donated rods free and clear to his own TU Chapter as well as mine. We raised $2200 with one of his rods this
year...about what he ought to be charging in my opinion.

And I second Mer's earlier mention of Jeff Hatton, arguably the most innovative of contemporary makers, mixing
125-year old techniques with the latest technology (& doing things few cane rodmakers would dare to do). I don't think I've ever seen one of
Jeff's rods in the secondary market.
