I bought Butchers wax to wax my rods like everybody recommended. Do I clean the cane before and if so , what do I use?

Clean it with mineral spirits, turpentine or plain water, avoid any "hotter" solvents so you don't dissolve the varnish.

Hi...
Maybe a stupid question... ? Are we talking about beeswax or paraffin ? Does it come in liquid or paste form, like the ones sold for antique furniture, or do you use a solvent to melt down the raw stuff ... ? And does it really help protecting varnished rods ?
Many thanks ! Giles |

I'd just wash with water unless its really dirty, then a little dish soap and water and rinse dry very good. Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax comes in a
can and is a wax paste with solvent - rub on liberally, wait for the solvent to evaporate and then polish with a soft cloth. I do it once a year to rods I use
and every few years to lesser used rods....

Another good alternative is Renaissance Wax- expensive but a little goes a long way. I do all my rods once a year whether they need it or not.
