St. George "Z" stamp? |
Lead | ||
|
I have come across a Hardy 3 screw 3-3/4" St. George. Does anyone have any information on who or what, the "Z" refers to on the inside of the
cage? In my limited research I've not found a maker stamp "Z". The spool is marked with a # "14" as on the cage, but lacks the Z
stamping. I'm hoping some of you Hardy experts can educate me. Thanks. Greg

Hi Greg, I can't help you with the name of the maker of your reel. Hardy maker's list is not complete and, from what I read, Hardy went through alot
more makers than their list provides, you may never know for certain. As with the spool not having a makers stamp, the St. George always has the makers stamp
on the inside frame only, from all the stamped reels I have seen, and the corresponding # on all parts, this is the way it was done for your style of reel.
Nice reel and beauty of an agate. Regards, Gary

Beautiful St George, I can't help you with who the maker was but in Hardy Brothers book by Drewitt it shows a 2 handle St George marked inside with 22 S so
I imagine this was the procedure used, enjoy it.

A wild guess could also be later repair initials - I have seen Hardy reels with the usual reelmaker mark - but with additional marking (smaller letters/numbers), which I guessed as refering to a later repair or modification? Heinz |

I have seen the "Z" stamp before too. I have a St. George reel in which the large letter stamp (in this case, an "F") is stamped on both
the spool and the interior of the cage, but this seems to be rarer than the letter or letters appearing solely on the cage.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
455 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Thank you all for your feedback. It's somehow comforting to know that there are a few other reels out there with the Z stamping. Perhaps someday we'll
be able to learn who Mr. "Z" was, or if the stamp is code for something other than some maker's initial. Greg

As opposed to representing a specific reel-maker, the letters 'Y' or 'Z' impressed into a Hardy frame can signify that a reel was a
post-war, transitional example comprised from preexisting, pre-war and/or wartime components.
