The rod is 9'-0", 3/2. All sections full and original length. No swelled butt, cane is medium brown. It is in a blue velvet covered formed case, with a brown canvas bag that the form case goes into. Red agate stripping guide, tip tops are agate also, faded red, with the smallest penetrations for the line that I've ever seen (1/16" drill bit will not fit through, and no, it's not gunked up. That is the AGATE dimension). The grip is a cigar, tapered at both ends, and 5" long. The grip/winding check look identical to Troutwing's Varney rod, from page 2 of the "influence" post pinned at the top of this page.
Red and green jasper alternating signature wraps 2 red, three green, two red. Tons of alternating green/red intermediates. English twist snake guides. 5 snakes plus the tip top on the tip section, all snakes wrapped w/green jasper. N/S rolled welt ferrules w/ 2 bands of knurled etching, reminescent of rolled welt ferrules found on some of the Edwards rods I've seen pics of on this forum. Ferrules are pinned, the "hood" section for the reel foot of the sliding band reel seat is pinned also. The varnish has a couple of small dings, otherwise appears to be in very good shape.
Downside: Most, if not all, the ferrules "rock" when flexed (at the ferrule/cane connection). Overall, I would rate the condition of the rod as very good.
My questions are:
- Can we verify (if possible) that this rod was made by Montague ? If not, can we hazard a guess as to who the maker was ?
- Vintage of the rod (I'd guess early 1920's or earlier based on the short grip, and form case)
- Approximate value of the rod. I'm only asking this because I intend to fish it. The up front purchase price was very reasonable, but ferrules need to be re-set. What is the cost of this ? (any recommendations on who to contact to do this work, please PM me). If the original purchase price plus the cost of re-setting ferrules goes beyond the realm of reasonable, I may contemplate returning the rod, as the description said the ferrules were tight.
Many thanks in advance.
James
PS - I can't figure out how to get my camera to take decent "close up" pics. I can't find how to set it for "macro", or whatever the correct term is. I'll take the best pics I can.
