I may have an issue with my Bill Ballan Heirloom Classic reel that I could use some advice on. This reel uses a simple single click pawl tensioned by a caliper spring. The problem I am having is the screw that mounts the pawl to the back plate keeps coming loose and then I have no drag at all. Well, I should clarify by saying that it has happened twice now. The first time it happened I went in and tightened the screw back down and all seemed to be fine. I figured it had just worked it's way loose over the years. Well, I was fishing the reel the other day and it came loose on me again and I had to go back to the truck and swap out reels. I have since gone in and tightened the screw down again (very snug this time) and maybe that will be the end of the problem?
But if it comes loose again, I may have a situtation where the screw (or the screw hole?) just does not have enough bite left in it to hold the pawl in place under the stress of being fished. If so, what are my options to repair this issue? Is this simply getting a new mounting screw or am I looking at a whole new back plate? Could the pawl possibly be riveted in place as a permanent fix? And last question; is this something that Mr. Ballan will need to address or are there others whom I could send the reel to for repair? On that note, does anyone have any experience with having Bill repair his reels?
Here is a shot of the set-up:
