I have the chance to buy an old Pat. Pending Battenkill 3/2 8.5 foot #79XX. It's a very heavy rod that I'm considering for steelhead/heavy bass and
walleye type fishing, probably 8-9 weight. The writing on the butt is about 60% intact. The serial # on the butt is partially missing the 9 that makes it
look like a 7. All pieces are full length and straight. The guides are an old twisted wire style on the butt, mid and one tip. The guides on the other tip
are the normal type I usually see on a Battenkill. A very slight right hand set in both tips, but not enough to make any difference and maybe not even noticed
by many folks. Black alumn. reel seat with some wear in one spot. Cork and bamboo in great shape. Ferrule fit from mid to butt is fine. Both tips are
pretty tight fit to the mid and can't be fully seated (exactly same for both tips so possibly due to being dirty and needing cleaned, but may need to be
replaced). All wraps are in excellent shape. If I got it, I would send it back to Orvis to have all modern guides put on it and have the ferrule situation
corrected if a cleaning didn't do it. I have no idea how much it weighs.
I can get it for $280. Not knowing how much an "upgrade" and possibly repair would be from Orvis, is this a decent price?
Thanks.
