Better tie on a heavier tippet.

I hear they readily rise to bisonychias also known as the Slate Drake Bob.

I will not be provoked, Sante.
Anyway he is one I've already caught and released. The release, believe it or not, can be even more ticklish than the catching. The trick is a very stealthy approach and a very long tippet. A silencer on your reel also helps. If you can't find one, Spruce knows all the good sources. |

Lots of sly wit and strange undercurrents in Ephemera these days!

They do rise to bisonychias, Spruce. I like to fish the early season hatch as the later one coincides with the rut. So, generally, I try to avoid the later
emergence.

BlackHillsBill wrote:Bill, I was, unbeknownst to you and the rather large brown, filming this most memorable hook-up! Here is the salmo trutta bison making a long, long, run with Bill in hot pursuit. Wish I had a photo of Bill as he struck a mighty fine piscatorial pose.......rod held high, long legs stretched out in a dead run, only side-stepping occasionally to avoid some rather viscuous brown deposits?

Ah, Tatanka! (Lakota for bison)
I too recommend catch and release for these big browns. Even disc drag reels are no match. Don't ask me how I know! But then, drive over to my friend, and sometimes fishing partner, Bruce Anderson's Western Buffalo Company in Rapid City and/or contact my friend and author Dan O'Brien's Wild Idea bison ranch. Order some steaks and burger and grill'em up. Add a nice cab or zin and you'll be glad you did! Best, Scott

This post cracked me up and the timing was something else......maybe it's because I live under a rock but the first time I'd ever heard of this
happening was this past weekend when......
Honest to God my buddy caught a Holstein cow on Saturday with a back cast in the driftless area in SE Minny
Luckily it was a small fly, but he did end up breaking it off......the cow wanted nothing to do with him retrieving it
I initially thought he was full of BS but then I saw a photo that his fishing partner had taken and had to believe him... If this is a fairly common occurrence especially in the western states......maybe Orvis should start making a telescoping "Ketchum ReleaseUm" tool specifically designed for retrieving flies from cattle....kind of a niche market I guess ? Mark B Something to consider: Be willing to share photos, information and the knowledge you have about your collection with anyone that has an interest in learning...........also share your knowledge to answer questions that others may have about items in their collections.........doing this will make you feel good and benefits this community ..................after all, what good is having knowledge that isn't shared. I can tell you from experience with bisonychia that if you try to share a pasture pool with a big male, you're likely to get your back cast gored. They
tend to be a mite protective of their space.

In the "Good Old Days" we used to cooperate with the SD State Parks folks and help them herd those Brownies with our helicopters... great fun!!! But
what was even more fun was rounding up the Elk herd on occasion for checkups and shots.

The Sioux used to manage this with a few ponies and
prayer. Sometimes even without the horses. No doubt about it: We've come a long, long way. |

Jeez Pat, I've been in cyberspace long enough to know there are some forms of postings that are unique enough to elicit a strike, rather than the usual
troll method.

Yeah, Pat. We readily acknowledge banjo's
a whole lot craftier--and a much better man than any of us, even Gunga Din.
