I cannot tell a lie (at least not about this), but I was given the bug by reading Gierach. Up till then, I was an unabashed graphite rod guy, who had moved
into the extreme end of lightness - tiny reels, 3 wt. rod (back when a 3 wt. was about at the bottom), #26 midges on the San Juan. Then I caught the disease,
Canus Addictus, after reading the early Gierach (like mathematicians and physicists, his best work was early on, IMHO). My first was a Phillipson
7' that I got from Len Codella (back in the Jersey days). I had him send it straight to the Flaming Gorge Lodge where I was staying the next week while
fishing the Green River. My first fish on cane was a 17' Snake River Cutthroat on a #18 Renegade (back when they had them on the Green) and I was
terminally infected. Some diseases are good to get and immunity never follows.
