I have an extremely similar marked Union Hardware rod with the same wrap scheme and hardware. The primary difference is the shape of the cork grip and the grip
check. The rod was made by Montague.

Ed,
I'd like to see pics too. I've seen several Union Hardware rods that most people would swear are Montys, but the hardware didn't look Monty to me. I think they were made by UH. From some other threads, it appears that UH had some of their own reel seat patents. If that's the case, why have Monty make your rods for you, when you have your own hardware?? Here's a related thread - http//clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/reply/93526#reply-93526 I don't have the answers, I'm just speculating. Maybe Dr. Todd or some other historian has some scoop on UH. . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

Rex, I'm no UH expert but I think this rod is the closest I've seen to nailing down the Montague attribution. The wrap colors and arrangement of the
wraps are both very similar to a lot of the older nice quality Montague rods that we have been seeing on the forum lately. I will try to get some pics up when
my camera returns, but I have a Monty trade rod that looks a lot like this one, I agree though, there are a lot of distinguishing features about these UH rods,
I'm wondering if they sold enough of them that they got Montague to make special hardware, here's my UH, with ferrules and winding check you don't
see on other Montys, but a typical Redwing grade bag...Todd

Hello Rex,
don't those ferrules look like this pic I sent you of my two "Union" (not Union Hardware) rods? If Union Hardware was making such high end product inhouse, it begs the question, who was their maker. Wasn't Devine also in Ithaca, NY? Maybe a rodmaker trained there? so many rods, so many questions, so few definitive answers.

My understanding is that Union Hardware was another company that outsourced their work and used a number of different makers. From the examples I've seen
that is probably correct. I've seen some really poor quality Union Hardware stuff and this example, in the picture, is obviously made by a better quality
outfit. In fact, it looks more like an Edwards or Thomas quality hardware.

Todd,
Check the ferrules and winding check on my rod. The reelseat on mine is a screwlock instead of sliding ring. No "Union" decal but obviously the same maker. Regards and WDE!! Bob L ![]() ![]()

Here are the pictures of my 9' rod. The varnish has "cooked", but almost all the wraps remain, so it is currently in my "rod shop" for
an overhaul. This rod is marked the same as JZ2's rod on the opposite side of the reel seat. I have another rod with the exact same reel seat, but more
ornate ferrules.
