thinking of making up a few rod bags....what is the proper length....the rod in bag is flush with the openings, or stick out a little bit, or disappears into
the bag a little bit?
also what is the best material, canvas, velvet or something else? Thanks, Don |

About 1/4" below bag top is about right.

Consider a synthetic that dries quickly .Some have the look of velvet or flannel .Just my 2cts worth.

As to length, I like the bags a little shorter: 1/8" from top.
Preferred weight depends on rod fit in tube. Flannel is nice, but would be too thick for the small-diameter tubes of some of my older rods. For these, I've had handkerchief-weight bags made up in a pleasing light-olive shade. They are very nicely made, and have a grommeted leather tab. The fit in the tube is fine, and they keep the rod sections apart, which is all I ask. |

In the event ferrule plugs are used, then you must add the length of the plug so that it will not be protruding above the lip of the bag. In that case you
must stich the bottom bag part of the tip sections in order to make up for the difference of the ferrule plug/s additional length.

I like Hardy's solution: a flap that folds over the top of the bag, with ties that I just wrap loosely so they go into the tube easily.

One thing to remember - always hot wash the length of fabric you are going to use for the bag BEFORE you make it up.....shrinkage in the wash can take up a lot
more than 5/32nds....I've got an awful lot of old rods which the ex-owner (or his missus) thought it would be a good idea to wash the bag before selling
the rod...

If the bag is an open top tube design I like the 1/4 inch longer answer. If made with a flap, I think the rod should stick out of the bag pockets by just less
than an inch or so, and the flap sized to suit.
