I Posted a request looking for a ivory/ivorine handle for this reel believing that the current black ebonite handle is a replacement. After
asking around, more than one person has told me it may be original, please what's your opinion.

Definite replacement. And notice too that the handle's cup has been replaced--it should be brass.

Handle and the tub has been replaced. I also think your reel is befor 1908. Tub should be like bubbas.
Need one. A true correct tub and ivory handle will cost. Next best is to have one made up. I had a ivory handle made. Cost me $100

Replacement handle ? | #6

Now this is something that I don't understand the rationale behind.
You have a decent looking and apparently functioning handle. I agree that it has been replaced. Why replace it ? Even if you are lucky enough to find a period handle and tub to fix it with it is still a "Replaced handle" and NOT the original equipment. So what has been gained ? Larry Swearingen New Hoosier after 43 years in California but born and raised in Missouri so you STILL gotta show me !

I too would leave well enough alone. You'll be out a couple hundred to replace both pieces, and the handle probably won't be ivory when you're
done. And the cup will be a newly machined piece as well.
The only way this makes sense is if you find a battered Hardy of the same age that costs next to nothing. |

Handle Replacement | #8 | ||

The handle has definitely been replaced, I agree with Larry, As long as the handle is tight and functional it should be left alone, finding an original will be
next to impossible. Besides the hole the replacement handle its in now is quite large, I'm quite sure you don't want it any bigger drilling it out and
fitting a new one.

Should the handle be replaced | #9
|
Should the handle be replaced, it's a matter of
opinion. I had a word with the fella who repairs reels at Hardy's in the U.K and he said the best he could propose is fitting a darker shade ivorine handle
normally fitted on their replica reels, he also added that the outcome would be a new handle on a old reel, although he would do his best to replace the handle
sympathetically.

If the reel was mine , I"d always be looking for a correct replacement handle and tub
Reel is ok looking and you can use it the way it is , I just think that it"s always best to make a reel as correct to the orignal as can be done Getting a new handle is the easy part. Finding a old correct tub will be hard Again if my reel and could not find a tub. I"d go with a replacement tub from the perfect repro"s and put a new white ivory handle on the reel Might cost $200 at the very most and to me would be a better looking reel also Yes best would be to find a busted ol reel and rob for parts. I just don"t that will happen as I have never seen one yet.

It's odd how there's a distinct difference in approach between the rod and reel guys.
Rods are restored down to the finest detail of diameter and colour of the last 2 turns of silk. Shouldn't reels be shown the same respect?
As long as they are not restored to defraud I'm all for it (Rods and Reels) 3p's worth Brian |

Glad brian someone else thinks like me on the reels. A fine reel like that hardy deseves to look it"s best. And I also think whatever it cost would come
back in the value of the reel
Ok. Can someone please tell me if that reel is befor 1908. I think it is as the spring is laying flat
