Posts: 1 06/15/2009 20:48	Tags : ferrules, spliced Gents, I'm just delving into the world of cane rod building and had a question about spliced rod planing forms. I have a 13' for 9 and a 14' for 10/11 spliced Sharpes rods and wanted to delve into creating similar rods with a hollowbuilt design. I imagine that the planing forms are quite different than a standard ferruled form and am curious what could be done to not make rod specific forms bc when I mic'd out my rods the splices are of different length and taper. I have seen the swelled butt forms and was curious if a similar design is utilized in the spliced design. If there is anyone who is versed in this type of construction I would greatly appreciate your inputas. Many Thanks, Nathan

Posts: 96 06/16/2009 03:55	Nathan, You probably cannot use forms for a spliced joint spey rod with the swelled splices. They have a very sharp decline where the splices come back down to the normal rod. I had a little bit of a problem putting them into my Morgan handmill, but eventually got it done with some shims. How deep are your planing forms as well. The butt section on a spey rod is really big and the depth of the screws on the planing form may not be deep enough as well. Tim Zietak

Posts: 107 06/17/2009 13:14	Hollow built spey rods tend to split down the middle of the flats long wise, probably from the twisting nature and heavy stresses of spey/skagit style casting. This gets discussed every even year at the Corbett Lake rodmakers gathering, and so most have abandoned trying to HB them (including Ron Grantham, and Bob Clay, who really know their stuff). The Magic Star cutter for the MHM might help with this problem, as it leaves a "chimney" of cane down the middle of each flat, though I haven't seen or heard of anyone building and testing one yet. chriso
