This is my fourth Thramer. I was pleased with the first three, but this one is a total gem!

Well, my new AJ Thramer 8' hollowbuilt for a 4-weight has gotten a couple of good tests over the past week or so. First, because of wind and second by a
few wild Henry's Fork rainbows. I had asked AJ for a rod that would handle casts of 15' as easily as 50'. He did the job. I wade with 8 feet of
line off the tip and an additional 30 in loops in my hand. I was a little worried about the post-noon winds that seem to hit the Fork almost every day from
June through September. Today we had those winds, and I had no difficulty placing the fly on feeding fish at 40-45 feet. The third concern was handling the
fight-to-the-death rainbows one encounters here. So far, no problems on fish up to a very deep 20" fish that was definitely in the 4# range. Had an
18" today that jumped 5 times and another of about the same size that took me within 5 turns of the backing. The rod did the job not yielding a bit when
I decided to test the 5X tippet by clamping down on all three fish so they could be led to either the bank or the net.
This is my fourth Thramer. I was pleased with the first three, but this one is a total gem! EP |

Sounds awesome! Needless to say, I got dibs in a few weeks.
Brook Trout are God's way of reminding us everything is going to be alright. |

Eric,
Congrats.... A good friend of mine just acquired a Thramer hollowbuilt Dickerson taper, and he loves his also... he had a very good day christening it on the Esopus in early June on lots of foot long silver bullets... Fish it well, and fish it often.... Ed |

Fine rod, demanding place to test it, best
educated rainbows in the world, and a first-rate test-caster. Right now it's raining buckets in Dakotah Territory, Eric, so I don't have much else to do but eat my heart out. Good thing. |

Very wet here in Island Park as well, Bill. Most of Fremont Cty has been under a
flood watch for the past two weeks. Upper Henry's Fork is running
at prime fishing levels in the 800 range, but hatches seem a tad scrambled by the cold weather. People are seeing green and brown drakes already, and we
haven't even had a solid flav appearance yet. Weird.

Eric,
great to hear that your rod met expectations and then some as it appears. I know you were itching to give it a try on that overrated has-been home water of yours. Its my understand that the rod will be available for rent through trouthunters? hope this summer gives you as much pleasure as last both in the fishing and family departments. will be up in the NE part of the park 7/17 for a few days......maybe convince the boys to swing down your way for an evening hatch you are one lucky @#$%...... all the best bill |

I will also caddie/ghillie for the renter @ the paltry fee of $500. per hour . . . and I walk very slowly, so as not to spook the fish, of course. And, as in Scotland, "Nae Macallan, nae fish." Hope you get to stop down here at the ditch -- yeah, it's overrated and actually pretty much washed up, but the conscientious angler will still find the occasional fish. EP |

Congratulations on a nice rod. I'm curious which one of his rods you ended up with (was that his proprietary taper) I ended up with his Classic series
(Payne 101) and really like the workmanship & finish. But I had a little trouble with finding the right line. Although it casted great at distance I had
trouble in close. I originally tried Cortland 444 Peach (5 wt DT & WF) but they didn't feel right so I then tried a Sylk (6wt WF) and that felt much
nicer in close. I was wondering how a 6wt Sylk DT would feel but I didn't have one around. Anyway, I'm glad you love your rod and I'd love to hear
what line your using thats giving you that great perfomance feeling.
Congratulations. |

Mine is a proprietary Thramer taper AJ suggested after a lot of phone conversation. I said I wanted a 4 weight that would handle a short line yet get me to
45-50 feet with a minimum of false casting. I told him of my experience casting a hollowbuilt Brandin 8'3" 2-pc hex dryfly taper that I described as
"a symphony" both for its feel and versatility, and he said "I think I can do that." IMO, he did. From past rods and discussion AJ knew
that I fished dries and/or emergers 90 percent of the time, so I believe he used a tweaking of one of his Dx tapers.
I fished the rod first with an SA DT4 Trout taper but have settled (at least for the moment) on an SA DT4 GPX taper, which seems to be a really good fit. I couple that to a Rio, SA or Umpqua 7.5' 4X leader to which I add 3-4 feet of either 5X or 6X, which turns over very nicely both in the calm and in the wind. Both close-in and distance casting was fine with either line, but the added weight of the GPX made it a tad easier to handle in wind. By my choice, the rod is really pretty much a Plain Jane (read "conservative") from a finish standpoint: Bellinger uplock slide band set with blued hardware and a burled cedar insert; slender full Wells grip; blued ferrules; light brown wraps with no CP to give them a translucent look. One simple signature wrap at the 20" mark. The Hardy Cascapedia 2-3-4 which I chose to accompany the rod gives the setup a very classy look and balances it perfectly to my taste. Incidentally, any apprehension I may have ever had about the Korean-made Hardy has been emphatically dispelled by its performance with the fish I've taken on it in the last week. EP |

clarkman23 wrote:I've got three of the four. I traded one back to AJ (a Dickerson 801510 taper) which I would have kept were I still fishing the northeastern streams where I grew up. It was just a bit too light for the larger western streams where I spend most of my time now. The other two are 8-foot, 5 weights; one a two piece, the other a three. Very different from one another: one I'd call semi-parabolic; the other is a medium+ fast taper, and both very pleasing to fish. Suspect I'll be using the latter a little later today, just so it doesn't get jealous of the 4-weight that's been occupying my time. EP |
