Posts: 1 06/24/2009 04:58	Tags : None First of all, best regards from Austria. My name is Bernd, and I am a comlete newbie in matter of bamboo-rod-building. Until now I have only build rods on carbon basis. For several months now, I inform myself about the art of cane rod building. This forum is a great place to get informations about these work, with very beautiful, great builded rods and true artist in this area. Now, the planing form is almost done, most tools are available and the bamboo is on shipping. No later than this autumn, I would begin with the construction of a good castable rod in #6. My dream is to use a self builded cane rod for the Master Instructor Certification. My question: Can give me a good advice for my first rod concerning the taper ? I don't have any specific recommendations, but a few questions may help others to come up with a taper, maybe get you thinking a bit more specifically what you want. Do you have a length in mind? 7 feet, 7.5 feet, 8 feet? You say a #6, I'm guessing an 8 foot (about 2.5 m)? What type of waters will you be fishing it on? Chalk streams, freestone? If you have specific waters, go ahead and list them, some of the other members may be familiar with them and will be better able to help choose. Of the graphite rods you fish, what type of rod do you prefer? Fast action that bends mostly in the tip? Slow that bends all the way down into the butt? Something in between? (if you have a specific rod you can name that would help because people may be familiar with it). Enjoy the hunt of making and casting the rod. This signature left intentionally blank.

Posts: 2177 06/24/2009 08:30 Bamboo preacher	Bernd, I used a rod I made during my basic certification exam. Though I am not certain, I think the limitations for equipment are the same for the Master certification as the basic. That means you will need a rod no longer than nine feet, and a line rated no heavier than #7. I used an 8' hollow built seven weight. The taper was rather loosely based on a Dickerson 8014G modified to suit my own needs. I would be happy to share the taper for that rod if it sounds appealing. But I would not recommend a hollow rod for a first effort. Make a few solid rods before attempting to hollow build. I do not know anyone who has attempted the Master Certification with bamboo, but several of us have accomplished the CCI level with bamboo rods. Posts: 2 06/24/2009 11:36	Hi Harry, hi mer Thank you for your prompt response. For my certfication I used a Redington CPS #6 9ft, with a SA ED Comp. I prefer a medium/fast rod with progressiv action. The taper should work into the deep, without a tip action. The short-range is a Sharpes Fario - 8ft 5in 2pc 5/6wt or a Dickerson 8013 8ft 2pc 5wt. Best regards, Bernd
