Pete,
While fishing for trout one of the rods he liked was his 8' T & T Paradigm. Kaneman1 |

I own a well-fished Edwards 9 1/2' Perfection (dates to around 1926) that came from Schweibert's collection.

In his book Trout, Schwiebert wrote about a unique 7'6" PHY Princess that Paul H. Young built for himself in
1958, with two different tips, one tapered to 4/64 and the other to a 4-1/2/64 tip top. Schwiebert acquired the Princess rod after Young's death.
Schwiebert wrote: "John Waller Hills observed that once in his life each fly-fisher encounters a rod so perfectly suited
to his personality and temperament and physical skills that it becomes a part of him. Thus far in my fishing odyssey, the seven-and-a-half-foot Princess passed
on to me from the collection of its master is that rod - it is that exquisitely poetic balance of delicacy and power that comes alive in the
hands."
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
460 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

In reading all his books and viewing rods from his estate at auction I would say in addition to the T&T already mentioned, his favorite rods were Orvis
Battenkills and Paul Young models. In many photos from thoughout the 70's & 80's he is shown with an Orvis or T&T. In the auction there were a
bunch of "reconstructed" Young rods, possibly made by Schwiebert from blanks or refinished and rebuilt in "creative" ways. Schwiebert also
used Graphite much of the time.

I agree--many (most?) of the auction rods had been refinished, and many, as Mainiac says, in "creative" ways. Schwiebert certainly didn't view
his rods as something precious. They were fishing rods.

Mr. Schwiebert used and wrote often about his 8-foot, 4 1/8 oz. Orvis Battenkill and its slow rhythm taper.

Had occasion to luck into sitting beside him at a T.U. event . A buddy and i picked seats at the end of a table dead center from the podium, and when
showtime came here comes Ernie, projector in hand asking if we minded if he set up on the end of the table. One of the slides had a closeup of his reel, a TR4
Walker, which had a Golden hue on the rim and handle. Since I had one like it at the time, I commented that it looked like gold in the sunlight....his
reply..."it is".
Can anybody confirm that? Neat either way.

Ernie last visit to Montana was to test a new rod Glenn Brackett was building while still at Winston. He received it before his death.

My thoughts are that his preference happened to be whatever rod he had in his hands at the time, I don't recall he ever not describing a rod he was using
as being other than the right thing for the moment...................

Ernie and PHY | #10 | ||

From my readings Ernie seemed to have a predilection for PHY rods. He certainly "used" his rods from all accounts, but given the fact that he was
presented so many rod it's not surprising that he wasn't particularly "caring" for his treasures.
I'm fortunate enough to own one of his rods, a Para17 with one tip that was restrored by John Pickard. John had also picked up a Texas General at the same time at the Lang auction. Both of the rods were in pretty sorry shape cosmetically, but sound physically. I've enjoyed my Para17, and have not yet set down and mic'd the rod to see how much it varies from the "norm" (if there is such a thing with PHY). From everything I've read brother Schwiebert was an "interesting" person, and so his selection of rods may well vary all over the map given time. Ralph |

One of his favorite salmon/steelhead rods was a Montagne Quad which he wrote about in Trout II. The Montagne was sold at Langs to a forum member.

Having only fished around him once and talking with him my impression was as others have indicated the rod at any particular time might be what had been given
him to "field test". Like golf /tennis etc. manufactures love to have celebrities use their product.

Mr. Schweibert was the feature at a book signing in Dick Pobst's Orvis Shop in Ada, MI. back in the early 80's... I got to talk to him there and rods
came up in the conversation. He had an 8' Orvis Battenkill and a PHY Perfectionist that he brought from home for fishing locally that evening. He stated
that those two were the rods he traveled with the most.

SCHWEIBERT's Favorite Rod | #14
|
My brother Bill and I had the opportunity to fish with Ernie Schweibert ( 1990's ) for one day on Fishing Creek in NE Penna. He was fishing a T & T ,8-
foot, 4-weight 'Paradigm', two piece rod. During an extended lunch break we discussed his choice of tackle. He mentioned that the T & T Paradigm (
impregnated model ) was his choice rod for this type of fishing. I was impressed . Year's later, when funding was available I acquired a similiar T & T
. He landed a very large Brown Trout that day, he had to use my landing net . Later that year a front cover picture of that fish and My net graced 'Fly
Fisherman ' magazine. ... Memories are fantastic.. During a break Ernie was kind in autographing whatever of his books we had with us. His Penmanship was
remarkable .. A Day we will always Remember ..In the following years we would usually encounter Ernie at the Somerset, NJ show. He always said Hello and we
exchanged small talk....... Dan N

Schwiebert's Granger | #16
|
Mr. Schwiebert wrote about fishing a Granger 8040 Special in his younger years (before WWII) with his father in Austria.
He allowed as how it was his "first really good rod". Schwiebert also wrote that the Granger was, in fact, later stolen, but that he still "fish(ed) it happily in (his) mind". My personal Schwiebert memory involved meeting him at the 1977 FFF Conclave in Steamboat Springs, CO. This was just after his opus "Trout" was published. Therefore, he seemed to get a real kick out my asking him to sign my early edition of "Matching the Hatch" instead. And I can attest to his entertaining and engaging persona, which was delightfully on display in the hotel bar nightly. Best regards,

dnester,
I must have been there that day also and watched him land that big brownie. Textbook all the way. I was also lucky enough to acquire his Garrison salmon rod from the auction. It needed no work and even had the ferrule plugs. I was ready to clean the ferrules and thought, those are his fingerprints on them and left them alone. That rod fished all over the world. Trout120 |

I have seen probably more photos of him on Fishing Creek and several places in the Delaware system over a fair span of years from when that sweater looked like
a sweater until you could not tell what it was and the rod he seemed to have in hand most often was his venerable Leonard 50, which he could sling out there a
good 80' with regularity. A few guys I know that had the pleasure of fishing with him said he usually fished it although the man had a bit of tackle.

I saw his Princess and Orvis in the Schwiebert display at the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester Vermont. I don't think it's on display
anymore.
Funny thing though, the Young and Orvis were coated with a heavy varnish overcoat. I can't believe Ernie would have done that, especially on the Orvis. Trout120 |
