What does it mean to "scarf" a tip? I assume it is a method of repairing, but I am unclear of it's meaning. Regards. DR

You cut a section at an angle, and you cut another section (2 different pieces) at the same angle and glue together to make the original section full length.
Usually the section is short or is broken and needs repair, so a scarf is a way of repairing a section and it is full length when done. (of course you want to
match tapers and color as close as possible)
