Good thing that line didn't get trademarked.
Anyway how do you figure to make a go of it just doing barbecue and inspiring awe? You get a loan? |

For the definitive opinion, I would be happy to refer you to the world's foremost expert on lobster, my ex-brother-in-law. Expert on eating lobster, at any rate. He could demolish several three pounders at a sitting, tomalley and all. Slathered in butter. |

John, is he your ex-brother-in-law because his arteries gave out?

You calling me a mooner, Ken? And you're
agreeing, Pat? Aw, gee. The fulfillment of my undergraduate ambition, such as it was, after I discovered I couldn't make it as journalism major. You smile, but not everybody found it such easy sledding in the fourth estate in those days. I learned too late you had to be able to spell editor with a single d and also only one e and to be able to distinguish between a deadline and a double-tapered line. So I became a trout bum instead and supported a growing family by poaching and teaching English. Gierach, on the other hand, took the high road. He majored in philosophy in order to learn what a double-tapered line was. Academic advisers, you see, were equivalent to bounty hunters then. You mean that you still have the pictures, Bob? |

There's no telling where they'll end up. The pictures, that is.

Yes, Bill, I remember that thread. As I recall, it started out on the topic of the quality of the penmanship of some rod makers as they inscribe their rods.
One of our members (whose name is a proscribed term as spelled out in the VWB by-laws) allowed as to how you wouldn't pick a surgeon based on the quality
of his handwriting. In rebuttal, one of our more sapient members (who was that, I wonder???) countered that if a surgeon signed his abdomen after removing his
appendix, he'd choose one who could write. I believe it was you who then brought up the matter of a circumcision. Interesting the way some people's
minds work, don't you think?

Isn't it? Your recollection is of course clearer
than mine, but, like mine, maybe a little selective. For instance, the matter of that lengthy inscription, the exact details of which I might have reported inexactly,granted, having nothing handy with which or on which to take notes. But who takes notes at such times anyway? No one I hope.

Not so selective here either. I don't remember the exact details but I do recall going to some... uhh... great lengths to describe one such inscription.
But why revisit that? We have so many other salient topics to revisit, eh?

Now Begins Our Search for Salient Topics. | #216 | ||

"We have so many other salient topics to revisit, eh?"
True, true, Bob. But if there was a hint in that, notice these gray hairs, and only a few at that, and be assured I missed it. So you better begin the revisiting yourself until I can put a coil or two of memory back into my no-memory lines. (See, by the way, how I always search for ways to drift back into the harbor of vague topicality? In some circles that is called conscience.) Let's see. Salient? Prominent . . . standing out . . . Why can't I see them then? You must be kidding. Should a person take precautionary measures for a visit up the Forum's memory lane? Geritol maybe? A little help here, please. What, ho! Already (see above) I observe the ghost of threads past has come to visit. It must be like a new moon with the old moon in its arms, that portent which signaled such a change in fortune for Sir Patrick Spens. Or could it be an empty-handed half moon, for which there is no explanation even in medieval ballads? Whatever. It's brought a box munch and means to stay, although, with any luck, maybe it's a fast eater. A little more help, please.

Caution.... we're watching you.
What about a discussion of European/English rods (especially those brought into the US in the 60s/70s) vs the dearth of US rods in that period? What kinds of quantities came in, how did folks like them, any problem areas, etc. Areas for both technical and esoteric observations... plus it was back in the good old days. But remember.... we're watching. Ralph |

Bill, anyone who edits a post eight times doesn't need "a little more help" from me. And I think it's fair to say that for any trip down the Forum's memory lane, you'd better be packing some protection. Geritol? Try penicillin. I think it's also fair to say, Ralph, that everything we talk about here can be classified as esoteric. Unless you're watching with the all-encompassing interest of a voyeur... I mean, moderator. I'm wondering what "dearth" of US rods you're pointing to in the 60s/70s. Weren't Orvis, Leonard, et.al., cranking out rods during that time? Or are you just trying to trick us into a US vs. them discussion that's bound to get shut down? Hmmmm? Besides, how can we have a discussion like that while knowing we're being watched? It gives me the willies.

The 60s/70s | #220 | ||
|
BHB;
As I understand things... The US manufacturers of cane rods were largely gone, and those that remained, Leonard/Orvis/etc were having a hard time obtaining materials. Even things like ferrules, etc were hard to come by for whatever reason, thus there was a restricted supply and higher prices . It was during those years that Anglers/Herters/et. al started bringing in a number of overseas rods to satisfy whatever demand for moderately priced cane there was... I was in SEA in the 60s and building a career in the 70s so I can't speak to the topic directly, but I've noted with interest some interesting rods that were brought into the US at the time, and the supposed reasons therefore. Many of the rods were parabolic, a favorite of mine, but some were just "straight" rods. I would think that the whys and wherefores of why this importing did not continue to any degree might be of interest to others. Was the failure due to a lack of interest in cane rods? Was it a case of "not invented here"? Were the actions not suited to US tastes? I don't see any need of "bashing" in a discussion of that nature, just an opinion (or hopefully some meaningful data) as to why the conclusions. But then again... it might just be too esoteric??? Thanks, Ralph
