8ft 5wt taper needed |
Lead | ||
|
I have several tapers but the few rods I built seem to work better with a heaver wt line. Im guessing that the tapers I have are the total measurements (
including varnish). I would like to use a Garrison or leonard taper. does someone have a 8ft 5wt taper either with or without varnish ? I just need to know if
it is an unfinished or finish measurement. Thanks Lewis

Most posted tapers will say whether were measured over varnish or not.
Are you looking for a two piece or three piece rod?

Hi Pete, Im looking for a 2 piece taper. I got one teper from the canerod site but it doesnt say if its over varnish and Iooked at Rays site and the tapers I
like say 0 deduction for varnish, Im guessing that it means I`ll have to deduct a little for the varish. Is that correct? Lewis

Have you looked at Rod DNA? There are a bunch of good tapers in there. I am finishing up a Payne 102 (8ft 5wt, 2 piece), which is a sweet rod. George Maurer
has the taper in his book, it is measured from an unvarnished blank.

I like both the Payne 102 and Leonard Model 40. This is my favorite Model 40 taper. Some builderss modify this by adding .002 to .004 to stations 0 and 5.
Surprisingly, this doesn't seem effect the action, as far as I can feel, but the fine tips are original.
Leonard 40 DF TIPS 0 - .064 5 - .072 10 - .090 15 - .100 20 - .118 25 - .128 30 - .138 35 - .152 40 - .170 45 - .194 48 - .196 BUTT 0 - .198 5 - .204 10 - .212 15 - .224 20 - .230 25 - .242 30 - .256 35 - .268 start of swelled butt 37 - .280 into swell 39 - .370 max swell 40 - .370 45 - .370 48 - .370 |

Thanks everyone. The Leonard 40 looks good and I`ll check Rod dna. How many taper sites are there? Rod dna will give me three sites but I`m all for as many as
I can find.

Lewis,
Rod DNA seems to have many of the public tapers available in it, but there are tapers floating all over the place. If you are looking for something in particular, the folks here generally seem to be able to find it for you. Have fun, Jay |

Lewis, you don't say what action or what purpose you're going to use the rod for. A Garrison or Leonard can be quite a bit different in action and tossing streamers or fishing midges can be quite different experiences. I have the taper for a solidly medium action Dickerson 8013 that I made once if you're interested. |

Lewis, Canwrap is right and I ought to have stressed that point, rather than assume you knew it. The Leonard taper is *very* different from the Payne (or a
Dickerson or the popular Winston 5 wt posted, etc.). The Payne, to my way of thinking, is enormously powerful and a medium action, one of the best general
purpose fly rods ever designed. The Leonard is quite fast (again, to my mind) but seems to absorb every casting mistake I make, convert all of that to raw
power, and blasts the line into the next county. It's sort of the ultimate big water dry fly, bed head emerger rod. You wouldn't want to fish a deep
sunk hi-D line with it or play a Steelhead (both of which I have done with a Payne 102) or fish a #24 Trico, but if you want to cast to a 6 pound brown sipping
#18 black caddis 60 feet away, the Leonard is the ticket, as it is for fishing to trout rising all around you in a lake.
