Earliest Bougle reels |
Lead | ||

Does anyone have pictures/scans of (a) the Bougle info from the 1903 Anglers' Guide and/or (b) examples of the earliest few years of Bougle production. I
understand that Neil Freeman had a 3" model in 2001 (lot 480). Also Pardy & Sons supposedly auctioned off a 3 1/8 model in the last few years. There
was a purported 3 incher recently on the auction site. I've heard of a few other sources, but never seen one. There are some private (status and
personality) collectors who have 5+ examples of the Bougle, but again, I haven't seen the reels. If you don't want to post or wish to be hidden from
general, feel free to email or send me a PM.
Much obliged, Chris

Chris,
They were 3" or 3 1/4" I imagine the one you saw listed at 3 1/8" was measured incorrectly.

only ever heard of a 3 and a 3 1/4 size , but there could very well be five diff reels with checks and leading , i know i have seen one that was a all correct leaded bougle , plus the 1904, 1912, 1917 or mark 1 and last i seen a mark 11 , plus seen one that they say was a polish model , i have always wanted one , 3 inch is just to small for me , but i'd jump at a 3 1/4 if i could find one , and if the price was not to high

The one that sold last week on the "auction" site was 3" and had the original check system. It looked to be in very good condition and went for
over $3600. I think there are some very passionate and wealthy collectors out there.

Purported 3 1/8 1912-check | #4 | ||

This is from the Pardy & Sons catalog from 2006. There were no internal pictures, nor do I have the reverse. But here is the text:
"REEL: A scarce early Hardy Bougle 1912 check reel, 2 7/8" diameter, 3 1/8" across pillars, lightweight alloy
fly reel, ivory handle, face plate stamped with maker's circular logo and "Bougle Reel", strapped rim tension regulator, smooth brass foot, lower
rolling pillar, Factory rim in-fill to side of pillar support. Illus. 1000/1500 [Pounds]"

Chris - you gotta be careful trusting those Auctioneer's descriptions
I would not mind betting they assumed 3 1/8 because of 'Perfect' sizing and that they did not come across many Bougle's

them auction houses couldn't measure a tea cup and get it correct , i'v asked for many many condition reports of reels and have them come back as the ?? so and so is good , and then find out that it's not what they say , my daddy always told us , ''you never buy a pig in a bag'' always have some extra eyes look and have someone play with the reel in there own hands , i just think if it was one in 3 1/8 then it would be in one of the 3 hardy books or in one of them old hardy catalogs , even that rare hardy 1912 check 2 3/4 with red agate that randy had , was talk of it in one of them hardy books and only a couple ever made , no one can be 100% sure it was not made in a 3 1/8 , but i think being 98% sure it was not made is more like it , yet you keep hunting chris as thats the game we all play , looking for the holly grail in the perfect reel that no one else has , bigger question chris is , did they ever make that bougle in LHW for all the rich people , i have never seen or heard of one

LHW bougle reel , and 2 of them , now that would be a reel worth some big hard cold cash , almost as rare as that LHW barton dry fly reel coming up for sale , i'm really surprised that a few fake ones havn't showed up on the place we not talk about , it never surprises me what i see for hardys now after all the searching i'v done , they would make just about whatever they could to sell to someone
