Do you keep a journal? |

I started fly fishing in 1979 ( I got a cortland "learn to fly fish kit" at Christmas in 78) Tied my first flies that summer. In 1984 I started
keeping a journal. I just started a new volume and in flipping throught the old volumes found a lot of pretty shoddy reporting as well as some neat memories.
What flies worked ,what didn't, water temps (sometimes), weather, thoughts, fish counts, notes about really amazing fish (a brown with 2 flies in it I
had forgotten about) A lot of falling in....... some browns and bows over 30" with some pics I had forgotten. My attitude about the "little
ones" up high changing to real appreciation and joy in the early 90's. My first bamboo Franken rod in 87 and then the beginnings of the
fisherman I am today. The few early flies stuck in the pages really drive home how much practice I've actually had (and how some things I am
still not very good at)..... All in all a pleasant evening trip down memory lane sitting at table with dad and laughing at pics and notes from when we both had
plenty of hair and it was brown. Also nice to sit there and realize how much time Dad took to take me fishing and say thank you. Just curious how many
others keep a journal or do some sort of record keeping.

Dont Keep a journal. My younger brother is my best friend and my only fly fishing partner. Things he forgot, I can still remember and the things I forgot or
would like to ,he reminds me from time to time. The idea of keeping records of the pass is a great idea. Matbe i`ll try it some day soon. Lewis

I started my journal almost thirty years ago, in late 1979. Went through two big, blank books, filled with notes, sketches, and pasted-in photos. In recent
years I have kept the journal electronically, though not as faithfully as before. Forum entries now serve some of the purposes that the old, handwritten
journal took care of.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
465 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

I have been over the last few years. I find that it settles arguements between my fishing and bird hunting buddies on what happened in what year. I make
extra notes and paste in pictures as well as infomation on bird numbers and hatching bugs.

tried a printed log for a long time - now keep it in Word. I have kept a log for over 30 years. It has helped me when I did not know what was happening. It
was especially useful when I finally moved to Montana.

Mine began in 1980 and I've not missed a fishing outing (that I know of) since.
In fact, I just made an entry for today's trip. I agree, it does make for interesting reading from time to time. Especially as memories fade. Best regards,

mine started in '93 after reading an entry in Flyfisherman Mag. Been a struggle of late to keep it up to date but,,, maybe the 40th b-day has something to
do with it
No salmon fisherman should be without a journal of dates,
winds, pressures, flies, water conditions, and temperatures. Priceless!!
Obsessed Salmon Chaser since 1988!!

I'm not sure it deserves to be called a journal, but about 3 years ago when I started fishing with bamboo, I began writing notes about the rod, reel and
line combinations that I fished, the fishing conditions, and other odds and ends of each occasion.

I have religiously kept a journal for the bird dogs for many years, I find it not only entertaining to read of days spent with dogs long gone, but also helps
if I forget how I handled a training situation before, once I realize that the newest young idiot is not the first to do whatever (all dead bird dogs are
saints
I had started a fishing journal way back when but let it drop, I started again last year to record a dream trip, so far I have kept it up with every day out. |

I kept a deer hunting journal in my early years, but dropped it when I passed the stage when my heart would nearly burst out of my chest when I killed one. Now
I take pictures and maybe a few notes electronically as to date and place hunted.
When I started fly fishing and reading Gierach, I started one and kept up with it for a few years, aptly named "Trout Wars". When it became apparent I wasn't much of an outdoor , I just focused on the fishing.
The trout takes the fly, the line tightens and it's like I was blind, but now I
see.
