I am in the process of restoring a SB 290 and a 291. Anyone know where I can get original ferrules? I need two males and two females in size 13/64ths.
Thanks. |

What's wrong with the original ferrules?

The ferrule fit is very loose on both rods. No pop at all! I understand that you can tighten them by "sqeezing the female. I am not quite sure how to
go about that without deforming the ferrule too much.

Golden Witch, I believe, has a good tutorial on tightening ferrules, which I've used with the ferrule puller they sell. It's not difficult, only a
little time consuming. You can make your own ferrule puller with a band saw and drill press. If they aren't cracked, it should work fine.

See if Mike Clark can help you out. He had a male and female for the butt section on my 8 foot South Bend 377. Not a very common rod size yet he had the
ferrules that were brand new.

Try the Art Parramoure pliers and wooden clothspin method, but TAKE YOUR TIME, I have used the method with complete success, and in one instance, complete
failure because I did not TAKE MY TIME, start at the bottom of the ferrule where the tip of the male slide would be when fully seated, and work your way around
and up, GENTLY squeezing the clothspin with the pliers, twisting the ferrule about 20 degrees or so, working around the ferrule, then re-positioning about one
clothspin width up the ferrule and repeating the procedure, until you get to the welt. Check the fit and repeat as necessary. The SB ferrules should require
about 20 repeats of the procedure. Todd

Joe,
Your male ferrules can be replated back to original size and refitted. No squeezing, possible damage to the female, etc. ,etc. There are two guys doing this that I know of .... Dave LeClair at .. http://www.flyandrodroom.com/ and Alan Kube at ckccement@aol.com. Dave is in NY and Alan's in Colorado. The price is reasonable. Dennis |
