Light 7' Quad Taper |
Lead | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
I'm about ready to start my first quad and would like to build a short 3 to 4 wt. Does anyone have a taper suggestion for something in the 7' - 3 wt.
range? I have a taper for an Edwards #25, 7' - 4 wt but can't seem to find much else. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ray

Quad tapers are hard to come by. I built the edwards #25 and I'm very happy with the rod. It's a nice all around fishing rod. If I would change the
taper I would make it a tad faster, but not much

Light Line Quad | #2 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Troutcreek:
I have a 7ft 2 pc Edwards #40. I bought the rod on ebay some years ago. It was in sorry state and was one of the first few rods I restored. It has an all cork reel seat, an 11/64 ferrule, a tiny stripper guide and regular twist snakes. It works very well with a DT 3wt Peach and has a delicate!!! feel to it. It can even handle a 2wt WF line but it does come alive with a 3. I should have taken the taper when I had it in the raw cane stage but I was not making rods at the time and it never occurred to me. I am leaving for a trip out west (Calgary) first thing tomorrow but I can (if you like) measure the taper for you when I return. It would have to be over varnish of course but with a 3thou correction it should be pretty close. Let me know. PS I don't make quads. May be you can make two blanks and we can work out a trade with one of the light line hex blanks that I make.

Brookies and Spey:
I actually have measured the taper and sent a photo of my notes to troutcreek. I will post the figures here within a couple of days.

I don't know if this is going to come through but I copied and pasted my email to troutcreek.
In the interest of speed and laziness I am sending you everything in the form of an attached photograph of my notes. Two flat to flat measurements (in thousands of an inch) at each station. Tip- from the end of the loop of the tiptop. Butt- from the welt of the female. The ferrule is an 11/64 step down. Average the measurements at each station and deduct 4 thou for varnish. You will have to extrapolate the measurement for station 20 of the tip as it falls on a guide. I have included a photograph of the rod's first brown back in 2004. I have a number of coseup photos of the restored rod. Let me know if you want them. If something is not clear please let me know. Thanks Oldfishbrain.
The tip looks strong like a 5wt. It must be a compound taper of sorts. That tip is a lot like some other Edwards 4 and 5 wts interesting. Thanks again, I must make one. |

Hi Marshall,
The taper you posted is that over varnish? What line wt is the taper? Is that a Edwards taper? Thanks for posting. |

The readings are minus varnish and I recall it was marked a 4 but handled a DT3 in a very nice manner. It has a nice quick action with some good flex and
feel. I don't know if it has any relationship with Edwards rods. Put it on Hexrod where you can see the stress with a 3 or 4.
