Which reel has the best overall design? |

Excluding many reels and don't want to go down that path. But for the reel model families below--a Flyweight and Featherweight would be the same and so
would a CFO click or disc drag--which had the best overall design? If you want to comment on why you chose what you chose, please do so!

There are some design features on the Lightweights that I wish had been retained on the CFO, like the check adjustment screw on the frame rim and the
dovetailed foot. Some things, like pawls and springs (and some screws), are interchangeable with the Lightweights, at least on the BBS CFO's (Before Bar
Stock).

CFO III c.1976 | #3 | ||

I have been fishing for 33 years with an Orvis CFO III that I purchased in 1976 and I just love the reel. I have many other reels that I fish with but the CFO
is the one that I use the most. It is nicked, dinged, battered, brused, and has finish loss but continues to serve me admirably. Without, I might add any
modification or replaced parts since I bought it and I fish frequently. The largest wild trout, 27" brown and 23" rainbow as well as a number of
24" browns and 20+" rainbows, I've caught were caught with this reel, I personally don't care to use the more modern CFO reels (bar stock or
disc drag), I prefer the original CFO's, designed by Stan Bogdan and made by Hardy.

Ray Hencken...You've just sung my song! I mean to say, I haven't caught the fish you've caught on yours, but I acquired my CFO III about that same
time and it still serves me well. I call it "my Bogdan". I got mine around 1975 when I was tying flies for Hank Roberts in Boulder, CO. I traded 3
Pentax Takumar lenses to Hank for a 7' Jenkins and that CFO III. Dang! Those were the days!

I fished with a CFO 1 just yesterday evening.
I fish a few others brands just as regularly depending on what line I need. Marquis on the list. Bob |

While I think full cage/no rim reels like the lightweights (especially the bar-stock machined ones) are tougher for some conditions, like slick, rocky streams
(I fall a lot), the CFO is perfect for most fishing--witness the imitators. Virtually every factory-made high-end (and not so high-end) reel designed since the
1970's has copied the one-sided frame design of the CFO. The original CFO III is also light enough that I can use it with 2wt and 3wt lines on short little
sub-two ounce rods, but has the capacity for a DT5 or WF6 if need be. For most of the 70's, and all of the 80's and 90's, a CFO III was my only
reel, and is still my most used, despite my dalliances with Featherweights, MG-3's, and other assorted pretenders.

Knowing that we'd be working a smaller stream, I fished with this CFO just yesterday ... its fine start-up is ideal for 6-8X tippets and for those like myself who use snake guides for fly-keepers, the CFO's open frame comes in handy when the tippet finds its way behind the spool and beneath lineguide. That said, had we opted to walk into Cheeseman Canyon, the CFO would certainly have replaced by a JLH ... in fact, if it were possible, I would retrofit all my CFOs with stronger, JLH-configured spring/pawl setups ... for my money, that would be the consummate reel. Design also embraces aesthetics and does any reel look more at home on bamboo than the LRH? If I discover within myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world ~ C.S. Lewis |

I have owned all of the reels and ended up keeping my CFO III with extra spools. One CFO IV and a Marquis 5 with an extra spool.
I fish the III most often out of this group because of the local streams and the rods I use on them.

Wow, despite the fact I own more Marquis then any other Hardy reel and I have 13 Hardys, I'd have to vote for the JLH. I think it was a more deluxe version
of the Marquis. A bit sturdier at the rim and less likely to bend if the spool is dropped (the one failure of the Marquis). My favorite Hardy ever is the
Bougle Mark IV.

The Hardy I use the most is my 3 1/4" Bougle. MK IV but it wasn't on the list. I liked the JLH, by far the most elegant of designs but in the end I
was happier fishing the Bougle, It makes the best sound of all, so I added extra spools and I'm all set. Just sold the JLH it was not being used and
I'm sure the new owner will be happy its a gem.

I opened this thread and found it was a Hardy thread and that the Perfect wasn´t included in the poll. So without being able to vote for my favourite Hardy
l`ll say the CFO among those mentioned in the poll. Probably because Stan designed it and I´d love to own a Wulff Ultimate reel also.
As for the Perfect; Full cage, side palming/fingering of the spool and time proven. I think it´s the nicest Hardy reel along with sister Bougle.

My first post here. I like the design of the Marquis best because of the exposed rim. But probably fish as much with my
3 Lightweight reels as i do with my 7 or 8 Marquis'es. Btw, Sparquero. Would love to see some more pic's of your Marquis 2

Add me to the list of mid-1970s CFO III buyers. I don't use mine so much anymore because it won't handle DT5 and I've gotten a like vintage CFO IV
with which I do most of my fishing...but, when I want the light line, DT3, out she comes, dinged, scuffed and ready to go.
