I think when I read the book my mind refused to accept the information that Heddon actually once put clown wrap on a rod. At this point all I can ask for is
that i never have to actually see one or work on one. Some things just should not be.

I will love my two #17s and my 0-F Featherweight no less
for having seen #22, John. This was the first time I read about those "clown wraps." But it did come along at the nadir of the Great Depression, after all, when blue-collar fishermen had trouble buying even blue-collar rods. And the ad does allow some hope about its utility: The Special Double Purpose Fly Rod in the Outfit is suitable to both Bass and Trout fishing. The Rod has plenty of power and backbone to handle large Bass Bugs, and yet is not too stiff for the Trout fisherman. It has the much desired "dry fly action" of a "fast tip." and stiffer mid and butt section. "Special Double Purpose" and "not too stiff for the Trout fisherman" and the club-with-a-buggy-whip-attached-to-it description of the action do fracture hopes just a little, though. Maybe if one is found, Andre will buy it and test it for us to allay our fears. What a gesture of Forum fellowship that would be. His name would be spoken in reverent whispers along our corridors. |

Well of course it is--in a manner of speaking. Sort of like in Twins baseball, when the bases are loaded and no one is out and catcher Joe Mauer comes to the mound to tell the pitcher that if he can strike out the side he might not have to spend the rest of his career playing double-A ball. They both cover their mouths with their gloves and speak in hushed tones so that no one can either read their lips or overhear their conversation--as if anyone would give a hoot in Hades what a pitcher with a 7.9 ERA had to say. Like that, except even more earnest. The Forum membership has not yet realized how urgent it is to find a Heddon #22 depicted in living color. The passenger pigeon of a great old rod company awaits rediscovery, maybe resuscitation. But they're too preoccupied with the impact of indifference upon the price of bamboo rods in the secondary market. And after you have just made it your personal quest too. Nerts. |

Forget the #22, I want to see a picture of BHB from 1934.

here's a picture of one I pulled off of ebay a while back. It's the only one I've ever seen.
It looks like it has the #8-13 ferrules and hardware. No clown wraps though.

No it doesn't look all that bad. Wonder if whoever sold it knew how rare it was and what they sold it for.

I think it went for around $200. It was the first one I've ever seen and I thought it was a factory mistake or a refinishing mistake or something, I'd
never heard of one before. But it had the bag and tube with it and the bag also said #22. So I checked my Heddon book and sure enough, there it was.
