Taper for Smallmouth Bass Streams |
Lead | ||
|
Any suggestions on a taper for smallmouth bass in small to medium size streams?Thinking I need a 6 weight.Want to stay under 8',although some of the 8'
3" rods look appealing.I have a Tonka Queen,but not sure if it will turn over some of the deer hair bugs.What do you use?

Grainger, Phillipson and Heddon, any of the 8 1/2 or 9' rods will work great.

The Orvis 8' 4 3/8oz is nice depending on the size of the water.

If you keep your flies on the smaller size for wollybuggers, etc., I think the Driggs taper is wonderful. For a 7'3" rod, it will cast a 6wf line and
handles streamers.

If you want to fish streamers, I think that a 6 wgt. is the perfect rod for small-stream bass. But I've found that 6 weights are not efficient at turning
over medium and large deer hair bugs. (Unless you want to play around with shortening the taper.) A very good smallmouth rod, although a bit longer than your
preferred length, is the SouthBend 8 1/2' model 59. I've added a few guides to mine, and it casts a DT7 or WF8 nicely. It will even throw a 6 weight,
but not as well. With the first two lines I mentioned, it fishes easily in close or out a good ways. And no problem turning over large, wind resistant flies.

I'd go with a 9' 7wt. Cheers.
