Edit: Seriously, I think three weeks is probably about right. Most folks will have read the ad in that time frame.

It makes no difference how long they are allowed to stay up if no one is going to monitor and do something about it. There has always been a three edit limit
but a lot of posts far exceed that. I would go with three weeks and leave the no reply feature.

I think it's pretty common on other forums that classifieds are automatically deleted after a given period of time -- a month or so. I've wondered why
that's not the policy here. If a seller wanted to re-list after that time, fine. No one would have to send or receive threatening messages about being on
the "offenders list" or having privileges suspended. The issue of multiple edits to bring an ad up to the top repeatedly is another issue. There
really should be a limit but it's probably hard to enforce. It would be nice if an ad would simply be automatically deleted if it was edited more than
three times -- but I don't suppose the yuku software is that smart.

We do have a three-edit limit, and no, the Yuku software isn't up to the task. So our moderators are tasked with tracking the ads that just seem to always
be on top. The system isn't perfect, but recalcitrants are caught more often these days.

This is the perfect venue for the sell of bamboo fly rods, desirable vintage fly reels and the accompanying ephemera.
I prefer to buy here than any other venue on the net. I do not consider these offerings and buyings commerce but an exchange of goods between knowledgable buyers and sellers of items both most desire. Surpasses mere commerce where basic needs drive purchases. bobbyg |

Hello All, I like this poll and the ability to respond. I agree with Bobby about everything said. I see this as a great great place for selling and acquiring
some great stuff from flyfisher people who are mostly knowledgable and usually pretty amiable. The rules are pretty simple and work for most of us most of
the time. and that's pretty swell in this day and age ! really what is wrong with that ? There are other catagories to discuss tapers. Tactics, rod care
& restoration, History and Makers, lines etc. Lots and lots of great stuff. **Many, Many Thanks to all You who make the board possible !! I am grateful for
the board and everyone who participates.** There my nickel's worth, Best,Paul

I don't think anyone is arguing about the usefulness of the Classified section here, I've bought at least half of my rods off it. I think what Ken is
trying to find out is "how long should things stay up"? Too long and things get too cluttered. Too short and they wind up just getting relisted.
Number of edits, limitations of the software, all these things play into what Ken is asking. Right now the cleanup of the ads is labor intensive for the
moderators. I'm not sure how the cleanup works, but I could imagine it something like "every Monday at 0400 GMT a moderator goes into the Classifieds,
sorts it by date order, newest on top, and everything older than 2 weeks gets deleted". For a SW guy, that screams of automation because it would be
consistent and you'd eliminate cries of "you're picking on me".
Editing posts. Tough one. Every edit bumps the post back to the top; in the past there were those that would edit a listing every time it fell halfway down the page. In my opinion, the only reason for editing a post should be "Sold Pending Funds", "i've added pictures", "I've added my contact/payment info" and a single allowed "bump to top" after one week. I would leave the price alone for the 2 week period, then delete and relist it with a modfied price if desired. Editing a reduced price starts to make it harder on the moderators: instead of just looking at the thread creation date, they need to start looking at the edited dates and trying to figure out which one to go by. Besides, too many people just start reducing price too quickly "just because". Single item per listing and run multiple listings? Starts to fill up the page. Multiple items per listing and run 1 listing? multiple edits per listing potentially. What's "best"? Probably be different for everyone. What's best for me is a 2 week period, 2 week period is from thread start date, not "last edited on date", maximum of 3 items per listing, allowed edit reasons of "Sold Pending Funds", "I've added pictures", "I've added my contact/payment info" and a single allowed "bump to top" after one week. Price change requires relisting. That's just me. The board owners are free to come use some of it or all of it just as they are free to discount all, some or none of it.

Mike - are you psychic or just well trained ?

Too well trained - tele-pathic it is.
Had you been psychic I was going to ask the result

Well, any answer that I gave you (no matter how correct it was), would have been sure to tick off 50% of the members. The other 50% would have been ticked if
that "wasn't the answer".
As for the "too well trained", being married for almost 20 years forces a man to learn a few tricks on "appearances".

Two weeks are more than long enough for a listing. If an item doesn't sell in that time period either no one wants it or it is over priced. Actually it
only takes a couple of days to know if your item/pricing is going to sell. An item in demand at the right price seldom gets halfway down the first page before
it sells. I think page placement is way over-rated as a selling tool.

I agree with Drew.
Of course the stuff he sells is always top notch and priced right. (That's why it never makes it to the lower half of the page.) Some of us, on the other hand, are more "Bargain Basement" than "Abercrombie & Fitch".

The length of time matters little to me. But I find the lack of consistency annoying.
In the Book section there are books offered for sale for months. Clearly, those are classified advertisements and they stay posted, sometimes for months and invite commentary. It would be no different if a rod maker had a sticky post for all his rods posted for an unlimited period of time. Something like," Now available and taking orders for the perfect 8' 5wt. Order your version today and be sure to get on the top of the list for what is destined to be a classic."
I am of course aware that the owner of this forum may have rights to do as it sees fit, but not all the books have been posted by the owner. |

I also agree two weeks seems to be about the right time frame for an item to sell. After that the item is so far down the list - page 6 or so - that few
people will take the time to look back that far anyway. If you want more exposure you can always relist the item again for another two weeks. The three edit
limit doesn't seem to work that well due to the fact that after three edits if you want your item at the top of the list again you can simply relist the
item. All in all I think the system works fairly well though. The only improvement I would like to see is more strict rule enforcement of which items you can
list for sale. The section description says that this section is for classic tackle sales but I have seen things for sale like suntan lotion and shirts. I
too have been guilty of this by selling graphite rods (I got rid of all of them for good) which do not really meet the definition of "classic
tackle".

Your heading for this question "CLASSIFIEDS" Leads new members to believe their clicking on a classifieds section! Also, I think Admin should
determine the length of time a post should remain!

I think the way the Classifieds are run on the Fiberglass Fly Rod Forum makes sense. Edits do not bump the listing to the top of the list. I think you can edit listings more than 3 times if necessary; say, you are selling multiple items and need to update your listing. Listings are automatically expunged after a set amount of time. There is a limit of two or three active listings at any one time - you should get a website or go on that internet site if you are selling more than two or three items. (alternatively, you could have a single active post and refer customers to multiple items on your Profile page). The Classified Forum is great for buying and selling. I appreciate the efforts of the moderators. - Kevin |
