Just weigh the first 30ft in grams then convert it to grains. You can then Google flyline weights and that will give the correct line size.

thanks -so if my line wt is 131 then it would be a 4 1/2 dt. 120 being a 4 and 140 being a 5

Yes, plastic is measured the same way. The size of silk can also be determined by it's diameter. For instance a 4wt (F) would be 0.035, level a DT would be
0.030 0.035 0.030. which would be GFG

Phoenix makes a great line.....I like theirs and Terenzio's a lot...Both makers are making lines similar in quality to some of the old Kingfishers and Hardy's I have re-done......I don't own a Thiebault. Keep in mind within grain variations that line size is just a number (a good starting point yes). What really matters is what rods you like it on. I think one of the things that labeling rods with a line weight has done is make us ignore how the rod feels for us. With any given rod you may like it with a line up or line down from what the label says. If it feels right it is right. |

I find phoenix silk on the light side of the weight spectrum. The one you have was probably originally labelled a DT 5.

Thanks for the info-I had heard they may weight light-I have two that weight 131. I will try these out on a couple of fe thomas rods to see if the 4 or the 5
like the lines.

Hi Guys, I think the line should be weighed with out the taper to determine its designation. I think that's right anyway. It might clarify what size it
is. Jay Edwards

Why not just see how it works on your rods and then use it on the ones you like it on.
I usually try numerous lines and tag the tub with what lines I like on that rod. |
