I echo Solitary Angler's choices and would add " Spaghetti Tapes " by Garcia/ Grissman/Rice. I also enjoy old blues by John Hurt, Honeyboy Edwards, Snoky Prior and many others. Townes is , along with Dylan, perhaps the greatest lyricist ever , , as well as a great singer-character. "Live at the Old Quarter " is amazing.

It doesn't get much better than reelsmith's list. Have you seen The Last Waltz? I have seen it countless times. Dr. John is absolutely great!
Add in: The Subdudes Red Hot Chili Peppers Sarah McLachlan~what a voice! Willie Nelson RMB |

Agreed, The Last Waltz is fantastic. That was one helluva' band. Did you know that Eric Clapton all but begged to join, but they just couldn't find a suitable spot for him?
If you like rock videos, check out the latest from The Doobie Brothers: Live From Wolftrap. Like CSN&Y, these guys shows have greatly improved in recent years. Tom Johnston is in great voice and is one of the most under-rated guitarman around. That band is tight-tight-tight. Now, if there was only a video of Little Feat's Waiting For Columbus years! By the way, I seemed to have left my female favoites off my list, so add: Linda Rondstat Joni Mitchell Bonnie Raitt Chaka Kahn and Joan Armatrading As for those one-hit wonders: Blues Image's I'm Your Captain and Dobie Gray's Drift Away are two of my alltime faves. dean. |

Can't believe I left out" The Band" , saw them several times as well as Rick Danko and Levon Helm solo shows .Always fantastic, wish Danko was still with us. Also Paul Butterfield , who I saw with Danko in a small club. Neil Young and Buffalo Springfield are favorites along with Gram Parsons 2 albums with Emmy Lou Harris which have magical harmonies. Guy Clark, Bill Morrissey, and Greg Brown.

Ah... there are some music that forever are associated with fishing trips to Norway in my mind. In particular, Dire straits, Springsteen, and a lot Irish stuff like the Pogues and the Chieftains.
A lot of classical music also, in particular Bach and Händel, but also some of their baroque contemporaries. There is also something special about playing Grieg when driving in Norway, one really understands how the Norwegian landscape inspired him. I also have a magic memory of driving up along river Rauma playing Beethoven's symphony no 9 on high volume... I also remember my very first fishing trip alone with friends, I was about 18, we were away for two weeks, and we forgot the bag with all the cassettes. There were two cassettes with various mixed music in the car and we all hated them to the guts when we came home. For some reason we never got the idea of buying something new on the trip. Regards, Martin in Sweden ------------------

Won't even bother to compile my list...I like elements of most everyone's lists, and then some. Good music in any genre is good music (I happily exclude rap, satisfyingly smug that my original premise regarding good music remains intact, as I refuse to consider chanting filthy rhymes while wearing baggy pants music).
Well, maybe a couple additions to the lists: a great lost classic 70's album...J.J. Cale's "Naturally" (with the racoon on the cover). It gets you into a great groove for cruising those long stretches and keeps you there. Has several original versions later appropriated by Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. Second, a recent addition: The Wood Brothers. I don't know how to describe these talented guys, except to say that I can hear so many influences (many on the above lists). Just powerful, eclectic, great sounds and lyrics. Have a listen! |

Give me the punk, pub rock and alternative bands that came out of England. The Cure, Elvis Costello, Dave Edmonds, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, Bill Nelson, Buzz cocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Peter Gabriel and David Bowie. I got caught up with the Sex Pistols after Sid died and later got into PIL.
The US bands the Ramones, STP, Todd Rundgren and the Dead Kennedys. My best concert was being in the pit when the Ramones were banging it out at a very small club in Rochester NY. My girlfriend and now my wife didnt care me leaving her in such a rowdy crowd to be by the stage but I could not resist. The primal sounds of the Ramones and other punk bands still bring me back to my college days. Bohemian bob |
