Congrats fishbates on your Spittler. Please post pics when you have a chance I would love to see it and get your impressions on it's action.
When I was on my vacation I had the opportunity to thoroughly examine a Spittler, Brandin and Carlson " Four ". My impressions I'll put the Spittler up and against the Brandin & Carlson any day of the week. The owner of the rods also concurred with my impression. It was impressive to say the least which made me very happy since I have a early to mid-2009 delivery date for one. Can't wait since it will be a great addition to my Quad collection-Winston 7'9 2/2 4/5 wt., Sweetgrass 7'9" 3/2 4/5 wt. and my Montagne 7'6" 2/2 4 wt. Mike is underrated and has flown under the radar for too long(35+ years). Dennis

That's a very interesting reel seat on the Spittler quad. It looks very similar to the tenite reelseats Bill Edwards used on his quads. What's the story on the reelseat? Those old fishermen: They're slow-moving and crabby and some of them talk to themselves, but they can catch trout.

I believe they are made of bakalite material and you have to be careful cutting them as they can melt, i dont know this for a fact iv tried to make contact
with mike lately and have not talked to him to find out more about the rod. very interesting indeed
a nice light rod hollow but im not sure how much is dave |

No. I will take it to a spring creek in PA with Rolf this weekend and watch him drool. He ordered one too so I might let him cast it.

Received a New Divine Rod Fairy today and it was worth the wait. Michael Sinclair and company have done themselves proud with this 7.5' 3/2 4wt. Superb
workmanship on all components shows, a drop dead gorgeous piece of tackle. Extensive casting will have to wait on less rain and temps above freezing, feels
light & crisp in hand. Regards, 16pa

Rocketman: I believe the reel seat on the Spittler quad is Delrin. Glad to see Mike finally getting some of the recognition he deserves. He has been quietly
building rods here in MN since the 70's. I've cast a few of his models and his 8' two-piece that fishes a #4/5 is an outstanding casting rod of
this configuration.

I think Mike's rods are right up there with Dana Gray's and Per Brandin's. The seat looks like either an original tenite reel seat from an old Edwards 30 series rod or a reproduction. I once had an Edwards Model 32 with the tenite seat and the metal ring. Looks very, very cool on the Spittler rod. I want to order a 7'6", 4 wt rod from Mike to go with my 8', 6 wt, 3-piece. I'll ask him about the reel seats. There was nothing wrong with tenite seats Edwards used except they would get soft if left in extreme heat and warp because Edwards neglected to extend the butt section all the way to the end of the reel seat on the rods that warped. The warped seat can be removed, straightened and an extension added to the butt to stabilize the seat. Having done this once it isn't difficult but does take patience. My initial curiosity was is this reelseat from an original Edwards quad or was it a reproduction, and if it's a reproduction where did Mike acquire it (if it is indeed an Edwards tenite reelseat). Anyway, I like the way that reel seat looks on the Spittler quad, I have always liked the aesthetics of the old Bill Edwards quad reeslseats.. An Edwards Model 50 tenite reel seat.

Rocketman: As you probably already know, Mike is a very talented machinist and the last time I was at his shop visiting he spent most the time showing me the
vintage lathes he had refurbished. I would bet that Mike built the reel seat himself. If Duane Johnson looks in on this thread he can likely clarify the
question about the reel seat as he and Mike have been friends and fishing buddies for years and he's probably second only to Mike in terms of knowledge
about Mike's rods.

Mike does make all his own reelseats in house. I have spoken with Mike specifically about this seat before and he stated that is was not difficult to do with the proper materials. You will see about 5 or 6 different reelseats on Spittlers made spanning the 25+ years of his career with different combinations of cork, woods, plastics, very similar to the many different kinds you'll see on Edwards Quads. |

Look what arrived in the mail last week! I ordered this with the optional nickel silver rings, and black guide wraps. I used Jeff Fultz's TRU-BLU and
blued the silver rings. The rings now match all the other metal hdwe. on the rod. My first Summers. Well worth the wait, man he does great work! Wonder if
there's room to get in line for an 8 footer? I'm a patient guy...........
