Maybe he can make smaller version for smaller rods?
I can only imagine how the rod casts as you describe....

I think the peckerhead makes Mario's rod a Mario rod.

Jeff just sent me this little beauty. Modern by any standard, 21st Century Prototype 7ft 1in 2/2, 2oz, 3/4wt, integrated bamboo ferrules, antique gold tipped
Granger green, titanium rings and butt plate, titanium SiC stripper. Looking forward to getting it out on the water.

Arthur,
That's quite the treasure trove of rods you have there. I'd also MUCH rather have 4-5 outstanding rods that 20 so-so rods! I would! Nice... Jeremy. |

Kaneman1,
Super looking Spittler. Nice pickup. How would you describe the action. Reason I ask since I have one on order which will be a 8' 3/2 6wt. and I'm thinking I would like the second tip to be a 5wt. Gotta luv those quads!!! Regards, Dennis |

Thanks for your kind words Jeremy and SS. I was surprised to receive many nice emails from collectors who have quietly amassed a larger collection of masters..
The Board is the true treasure trove folks!
That said, I was not trying to highlight modern masters over many very nice cane rods. I'm fortunate to like every one of the 31(!) cane rods I own, from blue collar to single tipped budget-level contemporary. The 'masters rods' are to me just the ones that are currently 'desirable' to 'most people' ( my list was influenced by Ron Shanaver & by reading George Black). I actually have more contemporary works which I value immensely as the makers are my good friends ( we love goofing around with different rod designs) and they craft amazing fishing rods. I'm learning from Banjo, Jeff Hatton and other generous gentlemen here and hope to use my small collection to promote cane rods and flyfishing in the tropical Orient. Do give me a tinkle should any board member drop by Singapore and we can go fishing. All my rods are available for fishing.. if you treat them right;-) Arthur |

Fody 274 - Flamed 7' 2 pc 2 tip 4 wt. | #1214 | ||
|
Fody 274 - Flamed 7' 2 pc 2 tip 4 wt. Relatively powerful modified Garrison taper for a 4. Strong tips. Darkly flamed - you can see the light nodes below the 1st guide that is typical of the whole rod. Bookmatched tips, virtually identical. Made in early 90's and pretty much new. A rod I am most enthusiatic about trying out....... |

Yes, it kind of does look like a dark T&T - somewhere between that and a dark Payne look - but the light nodes really stand out.

PHY Para 17 | #1218 | ||
|
PHY Co. Para 17, dated November 1951, built for Herb Witte by Paul H. Young. 8'6", 2/2, 5.20 oz. Varnished cane, half-Wells grip, black screwlock cork
seat, Detroit stamp on butt cap, brown decorative spiral wraps at ferrules, guides, tip tops, and at front of grip. Lettered on two flats by PHY.
First flat: "PARABOLIC 17" 8 1/2' - 5.20 oz. HCH Herb Witte Nov. 1951 Second flat: Fer. 17/64 Tip Top 5 1/2/64
I have lawn cast it, and it's a lot of fun! Not stiff or clubby, the rod flexes with a smooth parabolic push that is pretty much in sync with my casting speed and style. Even on grass it threw a smooth long line about as far as I've ever cast. It is lighter in the hand than I expected.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
445 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.
