Castafly - just seen your post - the big cat taper is a fast dry fly action like the GB taper, but I haven't tried a GB so can't comment on how they compare. As you can see from my edited post, the rod is an 8'.

Thanks to Mike and Kathy for this which also came UPS today. Four years and 5 months from order, 8' 5# 3 pc Payne cosmetics including spanish cedar from
the Payne shop and the 'Big Cat' taper (as named by Kathy) which is based on the Gierach Best taper. I can't wait to get the plastic off the grip
and go fishing!

Hey Piglegs--
Beautiful rod! I've never heard of the Big Cat taper - is it 8.5'? How does it differ from the Gierach-Best Special Taper? |

Hello Lasse,
the guy who was in Finland is me...;-)...at least I think so. Because I visited Pekka and Mauri last year to inspect Pekkas impressive collection. Amongst them were several very nice Gallas rods and ever since I rate Mr. Gallas work (and tapers!!) very highly. I had the chance to cast and see the very rod pictured above (Halstead tribute rod which belongs to a cane aficionado here in Germany) last weekend. Not my cup of tea taper-wise (I prefer parabolics) but very nice anyway in every respect and very close to an original Halstead casting wise (we had one there as well so could compare). |

maruoff wrote:Maruoff So it was you, i heard Mauri and Pekka were hosting some German guy... I have not had a chance to cast this rod, not even my lawn.It's getting very cold here and raining. I think John has sold quite a lot of rods for my friends here, parabolics and regular series, all have been good casters.Our rivers are often windy and fast, so i think this rod has enough power to handle them without being too heavy. What a wonderful surprise I would imagine. Please let us know how it fits your thoughts you had about this rod. How long was the wait by the way?

9 footer | #1371 | ||

So, last week I received a 9 foot E.W. Edwards Mt. Carmel Special. I placed a modest bid on ebay and I'll be damned if I I didn't win the auction.
That surprised the hell out of my cheap Jewish ass.
This evening I loaded it up with a wf 6 SA Mastery line. I'm telling you, that damn thing is a cannon. The more line that I put out, the more it would throw. I was casting dead on accurate with all of the distance that I could ever want. Not to mention, I looked good doing it. I don't know why people turn their noses up to 9 foot rods. I can't wait to get that shot gun out on the South Holston River on my 4 day Thanksgiving fishing vacation. I will try to post some pics when I get that 28 inch brown laying beside it. Aaron Wiener |

New rod | #1373 | ||

I just took possession of a very nice 8 1/2', 7 wt., PHY-Para 17, which our own Quashnet was kind enough to sell to me. It's the one on his PHY site
that he calls the "Herb Wiite" rod. It dispells the myths that these rods won't load in close. It will unfurl a 10' leader with an arm's
length of line past the tip using 5x and size 16's. I can use the same casting stroke and obtain distances heretofore unimaginable with very little effort.
In less than 18 hours I will be fishing with it on my favorite South Shore stream for resident trout, steelhead, and, lake-run browns.
Go Twins!!!! And if they don't get the job done, Go Tigers!! Scott |

Hope you enjoy your new rod on the lovely South Shore. I just returned from 2 weeks fishing those streams, and landed an 18lb King Salmon on my Para 17 clone.
Hope you get into some fish to test out your new stick.

I picked up a nice little 7 1/2-foot Heddon Black Beauty, 1 1/2F 3/2, a week ago and got a chance to try it out today. The reel is a Young Beaudex.

Found a sweet parabolic rod made by AJ and just had to have it. I love using those Parabolic rods and this one is great.
It's from his Classic series. Young Para 14 7'-9" 5 WT. What a great rod on the water, here are a few photos.

A Kiley Mosaic and a very happy birthday | #1379 | ||
|
I've been one of those evil lurkers on here for quite awhile - but yesterday I finally had a story that seemed worthy of my first post (I actually thought
I had posted before - but its been so long that I can't seem to get the login to work so I started a new one today)
As a backdrop, my wife, Josie, went with me to the Metolius bamboo gathering this year and watched me spend hours casting Steve Kiley's rods. In particular his 4wt Dry Fly Special aka the "Fall River." She also listened to me debate buying a rod for the next few months, wondering whether I should spend my hard earned unemployment check on one of Kiley's rods. It would have been my first bamboo rod (other than the ones I have made myself), but in the end, I just couldn't bring myself to do it - at least not until I started making some money. Fast forward a few more months to yesterday... my birthday. Josie has always given me very thoughtful gifts - but yesterday I think she outdid herself and proved once again that I am one lucky man. I had no idea what she had gotten me - but she had warned me not to go upstairs while she was at work. So I spent the day downstairs, wrapping a Payne 101 that I plan on giving her for Christmas. She got home at about 5, went upstairs and retrieved a small box - handed it to me and said "Happy Birthday." I opened the box and inside was a handwritten note that read "Redeemable for 1 day of fishing with your wife on a river of your choice (includes a boxed lunch)." I thought, cool, she wants to go fishing with me - good thing I am making her a rod. As I was contemplating where we might go fishing - she said - "Oh, I almost forgot - there is one other small thing I got you." She walked backed upstairs and entered the room with a black tube with Kiley's name on it. We all know what was inside - but here are a few pictures.
What a birthday, what a wife, what a rod. Thanks Steve for keeping this a surprise. Can't wait to try it out this weekend. |
