Cutthroat, you have a nice collection going. I hope, someday, to see one of Jack Howell's rods. His book is a classic on building bamboo rods; maybe the
classic, and I can only imagine what nice rods he fashioned during his building days. Ric

These are my keepers (for now)

The 3 pc. 8 1/2' rods currently sell for less than half of what they're worth, in my opinion. Just don't abuse the ferrules by over-lining them- (and like most vintage production rods, the SB ferrules probably deserve a re-set with modern adhesive if you're going to fish them heavily.) I just saw an 8 1/2' 323 in what looked like mint shape, 3/2, go for around $105, including shipping. Not the lighter line model- this one was for "D or HDH" 5/6 line- but still...an SB 323 or 346 casts as well as any Heddon 8 1/2' or Granger 8642. And the tips aren't as fragile, compared to the Heddon 1 3/4F and Granger 8642, both of which need their tips reinforced with a clear silk thread wrap between the last guide and tip-top if you're actually going to fish with them, imo...oops, did I say that? ) just sold: a Samson 7' 2/1 impregnated for 4 weight, and a 7 1/2' Wes Cooper 2/1 flamed rod for 5 or 6 weight. Maybe I'll get lucky, and the guy won't like them and will return them. Fiberglass Berkley Parametric 6' 4"/8" 5/1 for 5 weight UL spin/fly (with enough guides, for once) Fenwick Feralite FF70-4 7' 4/1 for 4/5 weight (project rod at present, picked up in poor condition except for the blank) Phillipson Orvis kit rod, 7' 6" 2/1 3 1/8 oz. for 5-6-7 weight Fenwick FF75-4 7' 6"' 4/1 for 5 weight Fenwick FF806-4 8' 4/1 for 5 or 6 weight Hardy JET 9' 2/1 for 5-6-7 weight

slantrock, what length are your L.W. Samson rods, and what do they look like? I owned a 7 footer-just sold it- that resembled an Orvis. Do yours have any
writing on them?

freestoner & slantrock:
I just acquired an L.W. Samson 7-footer last summer. It's a 2/1 rod; straw-colored and wrapped in translucent brown with blackened uplock reel seat with cork filler and Orvis-style ferrules. It's marked "Made by L.W. Samson" in ink ahead of the grip check. Casts a WF-5-F very nicely. I posted photos of the rod in a couple of threads here on the Forum, but did not receive much feedback on Mr. Samson and his rods. I'm aware of the mention in Martin Keane's "Classic Rods and Rodmakers". Thanks in advance for anything you can add. Photos would be GREAT! Regards, Flyman

I'm just starting a collection of Orvis Bamboo Rods. So far I have the following:
Penn Creek 7ft, 2/2, 4wt Seven Three 7ft, 2/2, 3wt Orvis 7/4 7ft 3/2 4wt Battenkill 7ft, 2/2, 6wt Far & Fine 7 1/2ft, 2/2, 5wt When getting a Orvis Superfine which model should a guy purchase 6 1/2ft, 2/2 or a 7ft 2/2 and is there a 3 piece model? Also, which would you recommend in getting a Flea or a Midge, and what model? My last question is if your fishing nymph what rod would you recomend getting? Sorry for all the question...... you can tell I'm new at this but I'm trying to learn, Thanks |

@Chief
I fish 99% of the time with weighted nymphs. I own & fish a 7ft Superfine and that's because that was the one that came along my path first. My first idea was to get the 7.6ft Superfine since a longer rod makes mending a lot easier. However I just did fine with a shorter rod. About which rod to recommend for nymphing? My opinion is that every rod will do. Sure, a longer rod will make mending easier, lifting etc. Just adjust the rod to the situation. E.g. using a 7/3 on a fast freestone river is probably not a good combo.

Chief, you got some good advice from ibookje about matching the rod to the water you fish. From your posts you seem to like the shorter rods, you hae nice rods
already, so they should be just fine. Later if you fish bigger water, some streams east and west or wind is a factor you may want a limestone special or the
4 3/4 oz joe brooks model in orvis rods ,for your collection. If you are happy with the way the rods you have performnow I would not worry to much about it and
just fish what you have and enjoy them.
