Robert Traver and protege c. 1983, from a National Geographic book I picked up a while back.
<edit> The title of the book is America's Hidden Corners: Off The Beaten Path. (Copies are commonly seen in good used condition in thrift stores.) This photo takes up most of pages 102-103; the kid in the photo is identified as Rob Cambray. The photo is found in the chapter on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. fwiw, the rod in the picture looks to me like an Abu glass rod from that era, or possibly a Daiwa. I'm thinking it was loaned to Traver by his fishing partner, most likely. The text notes that a favorite nickname of Traver's for brook trout was "mermaids."

in the forest. I have this feeling of walking around for days with the wind knocked out of me." --Jim Harrison

Dr. Robert H. Smith, author of Native Trout of North America - one of those spectacularly special titles. And he did it all in the name of research!!

Hey,
Great picture of Robert....That is my guide boat from the Dean when I guided for Hodson's camp during my college years.I took that shot.Hard to believe, but he fished a 7 1/2' Orvis for much of that week, and that fish was landed on that rod.It stayed straight, and was fine the whole week! If you have a copy of his book, there is also a picture of a Coastal Cutty that he caught on the Dean with me.The Cutthtroat was brought in when a baby steelhead of about 8'' ate his big stelhead fly fly and as we stripped it in a 4lb. Cutty grabbed it and would not let go till we had him in the boat.We had to take a picture of that bad boy!Robert was a great guy and a gentleman. Thanks Nativebrownie...good memories. |

If I don't miss my guess, that pool in the photo of Poul Jorgensen fishing is on the Rapidan.

Freestoner,
I'll bet that's a bullseye, you know those waters well. That's good news for me as I usually walk the Rapidan at least once every Fall. Would be a banner day to stumble upon that lovely spot... Perhaps I'll tie one of his fine ties for that pool (or one of the many other gorgeous spots along the Rapidan)... Appreciated... NB |
