I'm hoping someone can assist me in learning the value and possibly some history of an old Winston bamboo rod that I've had in storage for over 40
years! As noted above, it is inked "R.L. Winston, 9' 5 1/8 oz" Serial number 6774. Two piece rod, no extra tip. This rod was given to me by a
(now deceased) member of the Golden Gate Casting Club back in 1965. It also bears the name of a previous owner. I am at least the third owner. The rod is not
perfect. The tip was possibly broken and a replacemnt tiptop guide installed because the tip section is about 3" shorter than the butt section. It appears
that a previous owner may have applied a touch-up layer of varnish to a couple spots on the butt section. Also, a number was faintly etched onto the bakelite
reel seat. This is very shallow and could probably be buffed off. The cork grip appears to have been sanded/sculpted to custom-fit the first owner's hand.
(I'm assuming this is not the way the cork was shaped by the builder.) In spite of it's defects, I'm fond of this rod but not so much so that I
wouldn't consider selling it. This is my first step in trying to decide what to do with it... Keep it? Refurbish it? Sell it? Refurb, then sell? Thanks to
all for any opinions or comments.
