Beautiful St. George! | #463

I recently sold a reel almost exactly like it to a fellow in Canada (not Rich...though Rich might have fanagled it somehow by now!). According to Hardy freaks
more expert than I, don't let the rivets fool you: unless you find evidence that they have been tampered with, then they are 100% correct and original.
The check is a very early Mk II style before they started adding the back-up set. With the white handle and other features, you're looking at ca. 1921-22.
I can't see the bottom of the foot in your pics, but presume to find a single rivet attaching the alloy foot. It may be stamped "England" on
the foot somewhere, too. If this reel is like the one I had, you'll be VERY pleased to know that this particular 3" model weighs, at just about
4.5oz, a good 1oz less than the same model from the late 1920s onward, and so it will provide very good service balancing some of todays lighter hollow rods.
If I weren't such a nut for LHW reels, this was one reel I was going to keep. Probably should have kept it just to train myself to wind right handed. Oh
well, it found a happy home.
P.S. If anyone reading this ever finds such a reel in good shape AND left hand wind...I will pay you A LOT for it. Chris

chris. Yes it has a single rivet on the foot and is stamped 'England'. Thanks for the info.
Randy. You mustbe confusing me with someone else. This is actually only the 4th reel purchase I have made as I am new to collecting. Also got a repro St.George Junior at the same auction for £260 which I will use. |

Hardy 3 3/4 Perfect, Hardy 3 1/2 Perfect, Hardy 3 7/8 Perfect and a 4" Dingley Perfect. This could be an illness but it's fun. I need to slow down. These are all going to be fished.

Steve, more info on your reel...and another "U" stamp | #468

Here's the link to the earlier thread on the reel I sold. Note that it is
stamped "U" over 13 vs. "U" over 2 like yours.

The Blue Collar Special | #469

Raise your hand if a Pflueger Medalist was your first fly reel. Here are two Medalists from the 30s. The line guard model 1494 was made in 1938 and goes with
the box in the photo and with the papers inside the box. You can't see the pencil writing on the side of the box but it says 7.50. I assume that's
the original price. (I did a quick real dollar conversion and came up with an equivalent $115 in 2008 dollars.) The other reel just came to me from
Watercolor Man and it's an earlier 1394 model without a line guard. The sculpted caged spool is a nice touch.

Just picked up a 3 3/8 Dingley perfect. Got her cleaned up a bit last night and I can't wait to get her a silk line and out on the water.

Who? Me? But I can't afford such a reel!!!! | #476

What a difference one crack
makes...
It's in the frame, barely visible but very noticable to the touch. A serious structural problem if you'd want to take the reel fishing. Fortunately I wouldn't think about that - who in all honesty would fish an old Bouglé? I realise it's an understandable no-go for most collectors, but I have a weak spot for scarred reels. The size of my wallet might have something to do with it too Details aside, it made a more than substantial
price difference. My old Silex as trade bait and a modest bit of cash were enough to reel it in.
It's the smoothest vintage reel I've ever held in my hands, it purrs like a kitten. Looks stunning, beautiful patina, strapped tension regulator, ivorine handle, that check, all parts stamped correctly. A reel I'm proud and delighted to add to my collection. Purchased at the annual VHV/ORCA vintage tackle fair in Eindhoven, Holland. Today was a good day...
