freestoner,
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a wonderful film by one of my favorite directors, John Huston.
Outstanding performances by Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Mr. Huston's father, Walter Huston.
A really fine morality play!

An almost unknown psychological thriller Western is "No Name on the Bullet" with Audie Murphy. Perhaps my favorite Western of all time is still
"Lonesome Dove". For LD fans, the last of the novels to be made into a mini series, COMANCHE MOON is scheduled for network TV release on Dec 30 of
this year. Comanche Moon just may be the best book of the entire series. It fills the gap in the timeline
between "Dead Man's Walk" and the original "Lonesome Dove".

From the list, "The Searchers."
Got to add "The Sons of Katie Elder," "MacKenna's Gold" and I am very partial to "Last of the Dogmen." |

I agree with Bulldog. " The Long Riders" was the best western I can ever recall seeing, hands down. I can't believe nobody has mentioned Little
Big Man or the inimitable Blazing Saddles. I always enjoyed the varios interpretations of Custer's demise as well. Would love to see a definitive version
done with a cast comparable to that in The Long Riders. Most authentic series hs to be Deadwood.

All y'all have hit the nail on the big screen classics-- I love 'em all. But for the small screen, and with all the well-deserved nods to Clint,
let's not forget where it all began, and in B&W to boot..... "Roll'm, Roll'm, Roll'm,"

Roger,
I hadn't thought about Mackenna's Gold in years. Now I can't get that Julie Newmar skinnydipping scene out of my head. Unfortunately, I'm supposed to be working. |

Certainly Oscar-deserving, I agree.

High Noon, especially when the word got out that Gary Cooper was boffing Grace Kelly during the making of the movie.
Watching it again with that in mind gives it a whole new perspective. gofish |

I like John Ford's movies and that includes "My Darling Clementine"... "The Searchers" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty
Valance". Of course Clint Eastwood's movies are tops as well.

My favorite contemporary western, and not sure it qualifies as a western, is Hud!
I don't know who cast this movie but they got it dead-on! The performances were all Oscar quality, and if I'm not mistaken Patricia Neal hoisted the supporting actress award. Paul Newman in his prime! If you've never seen this fine morality play, check it out! Bob

Hi Guys, Not just my favorite western but my favorite movie is 'The Misfits' with Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter, Eli
Wallach. John Huston directed an Arthur Miller screenplay. Miller was Monroe's husband at the time. It was the last Monroe movie and it killed Gable.
I've lived my life by this movie.. I know the last word. Jay Edwards

Although there are many, I'd have to say the gun fight in Open Range is one of the best and
I've watched it often.

Growing up, I always enjoyed Jimmy Stewart's movies, so I'll choose "Winchester '73". Stewart with John Wayne in "The Man Who Shot
Liberty Valance" is another favorite. Of course Newman and Redford in "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" is hard to beat.
