Wax your rod ? |
Lead | ||
|
I was under the impression that putting a light coat of wax on your rod was a good thing.I just returned from a trip up to the Catskills, where I meet up with
three other bamboo anglers and the conversation turned to caring for your rod they all said they never put wax on there rods because the wax drys out the
varnish. What do you think of this?

Perhaps they were joking? Waxing discussions arise here with some frequency. The question typically is not whether to wax or not, but which wax to use.
Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax gets some votes in the following thread, and is what I use at least once a year, but there are other favorites. See:

Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 290 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Wax, whether on a varnished rod or grandma's dining room table, is a sacrificial layer which will oxidize, and be damaged by acidic sweat, lime, dirt and
other grunge. By receiving all this environmental abuse it protects the underlying varnish. Through time and use the wax will degrade and need to be
replenished. A much easier task than re varnishing.

I think there has been concern expressed about these waxes drying out the varnish and the solvents used to carry the wax. Folks on this board in the know
about chemistry have assured us that the cured varnished will deal with the solvents in Butcher's BAW just fine. As far as drying out the varnish? Heard
this rumor/opinion but it was never substantiated IIRC.

Finely finished wood furniture has been waxed for centuries, and the finishes have held up just fine. Wax will prevent oxidation of the varnish. I think any
good paste wax made for furniture will be suitable. I use Minwax paste wood wax on my rods, and it does a nice job. Wax made for wood will contain carnuba
and/or bees' wax. Both are inert, natural waxes that put a beautiful, protective luster on anything made of wood...or bamboo.

Any good grade of carnauba wax, Butcher's BAW or some of the waxes from the Woodcraft store will protect the finish on your rod. It will also lend a wee
bit more water repellancy to the finish too. Cured varnish is pretty much impervious to any solvents that may be added to the wax for application. The solvents
will evaporate away when the wax is applied and buffed out anyway.
My bet is that you met the three other bamboo anglers who gave you the "advice" at the end of the day when their collective single malt flasks were nearing empty. Regards and WDE!!! Bob L. Wax formulations are not always the same. The main wax ingredient such as canuba or bees wax may be the same, but the additives (surfactants) and

If the solvents in the wax are petroleum distillates (mineral spirits, naphtha), then there shouldn't be a problem. If, however, there's toluene in
the wax, then you may be asking for trouble.

As Bulldog would say Butchers works on everything….Even a HOT ROD This is a manifold and carburetors that have been on this same SS/AMX for 38 years and I clean it regularly with Butchers and It has no ugly residue left behind like other wax.

Yes, works well. Its called Town Talk and its made in the UK. I like the smell and it effectively seems to work like Butchers. I use both.
