Some of the antique items went for more than Garrison's, etc. Go figure. Whatever floats your boat I guess.
Take a look on Lang's (ebay's) website.

Holy Smokes!! Did Leonard and Payne's take a hit on most items at this auction?? Just finished perusing the first half. What's interesting is that
many prices reflected how some members here feel. Dickerson's went sky high, while some superb Payne's and Leonard's were real deals. Many
Garrison's were more less status quo where Brandin's went through the roof!

Of course it's heresy to say so, but Garrison has always struck me as overrated. Nice casting tools, but...
Then, our reactions are individual and varied. But I've wondered for years what, other than high prices, kept his rods so high priced. |

Confused? | #4 | ||

I have been trying to follow the auction and wonder why it seems like some items have been "skipped over"

Also confused where is the stuff that has sold? Everything I see has 7 - 8 hrs left.

The stuff that has 5-6 hours left is listed that way because the listing time refers to when the last item of the auction is sold and the auction closes and
all of the prices are listed--so stuff that sold this morning at 11am EST is still being listed as unsold.

W&M & Goodwin Granger were well received. A Excellent W&M Aristocrat 7' sold for $1400 + buyer premium. Makes me sad since I just sold one on
the forum in nicer condition for $1150. Well, I still have my Deluxe 7' 2/2 with hammer handle in the rod rack.

There is something weird going on though .. it seems like the stuff that has sold for prices at or above estimate shows as sold but the stuff that went
'cheap' does not get posted as sold - I have bought a Payne which I have already had an invoice for but the F E Thomas that I also bought (in an
earlier lot) is still not showing as sold and nothing heard from them or through ebay on it ...
Bob - according to my notes #1248 sold for $1,400 plus the premium

Hey Ken,
Did you buy the FE Thomas 8' 2/2 Special? Just wondering since I own a 8' Browntone 2/2. Dennis |

Ken is right, something weird is going on--it's not clear why some items are still listed as unsold and others are listed as sold--. But I'm not sure
about his theory of below-estimate sales being listed as not-sold-yet--since the 6' Needham sold for more than twice estimate, and it's being listed as
not-sold-yet.
One thing I found disconcerting is this: those who submitted abstentee bids that were on the high side of the estimates had those bids hit first, or at least early, as the auctioneer came down at the start--it makes it rather disadvantageous to a buyer to bid this way, since I saw several obvious absentee bids (from both the floor and eBay) start bidding above estimate and stop right there. If that makes any sense? Firehole--I didn't see an 8' 2/2 special--though there were a couple of 3/2s--which lot are you referring to? bb

Bearbutt,
I was following the FE Thomas 8' 2/2 and it kind of blew me way with auction closing at $2000 + premium. I was interested since I own a Browntone with the same cork reel seat but with hanging tag on the orig bag and labeled tube. I'll get the # shortly. It was #73. I'm glad FE's are getting respect. Just noticed it was 3/2 they were only showing the butt and two tips. My mistake but 2/2's are more rare than 3/2's. Bob, They haven't posted the results of the Bradford but I would guess it's going to be in the $2000 range. Dennis

I was there on Thursday and Friday.. the Discovery auction was interesting as prices seemed pretty strong, such that rods of unknown origin were selling for
$500 and up...As for Friday my impression was that some makers were surprisingly strong while others, not so much.. two Gillam's were sold on Friday, one
for mid-3's, the other for $5750... I would have expected a stronger showing... Carlson Quads were strong on Friday several selling for in excess of $3000
and at least one I remember went for about $5500... no surprise there...
but if you really want to see madness check the prices on the Derrydale Press offerings.. WOW! |

Dennis--
Yes, exactly: the FET Special that went for $2000 was a 3/2, even though the photo only showed the butt section & two tips--for some reason Langs has this habit of leaving out mid sections in their photos--all three 8' Thomases in the auction were 3/2s, and none of the photos showed the mids. Nonetheless, I agree with you about the 2/2s being more rare, and would love to find one for myself. bb |

I'm not sure that around 90 rods got sold this morning. I couldn't access info on those rods at the time or get on online bidding. I kept getting a
message about being unable to connect. Also, I had bid on a couple of those rods before hand and my bids were received but have received no notification from
ebay that I won or didn't win those rods and they still appear in 'My ebay' as not having been auctioned off. I have a feeling there are a number
of pissed off people out there.

Kind of makes you wonder what the online bidders are getting in the way of service for their 20%?

Does this have shades of another recent auction--? I have to believe that there's simply a lag w/ updating the computers. Lang's is pretty
sophisticated. Yet they're tied in to eBay, and there was that other recent disastrous auction...
