Well, I always say (and most of the time I mean it) that big fish may be bigger, but small fish are prettier.

OK, I have shown this reel several times before. 3 3/4" Perfect, '30s made by Jimmy Smith. I often wonder how many nice fish it has seen, and I do
aspire to add to that number. It just happens to have my favorite line on it for winter steelheading, so I use it every day. I will never post this reel
again, but this is such a pretty fish, I thought you might like to see it one last time. I caught this buck steelhead this afternoon just as it was getting
dark after a day of slogging in the snow.

Sounds good! fees are $40 a month, payable to me
. We'll have
meetings twice a year in Montana, where you can show me where to catch beaudies like that one..
Seriously though, nice fish, and shot, and of course, reel. Eric |

I must sadly report that the rod is not bamboo. I have but one cane rod, it is suitable for light salmon but is a single hander with no makers marks. The rod is a CND expert 9 wt 14 ft. Spey casting with cane is a lot of work and you do have to cast thousands of times with heavy tips and flies in winter to hit a fish. Graphite is the only answer for us senior citizens (well almost) to be able to tough it out day in and day out. |

Mr. Taupo Hits the High Notes | #280 | ||

Finished my chores and decided to walk up to my favorite pool for the afternoon bite that has been pretty reliable for the past week or so. The river is very
low and clear, we have had no significant rain since December and that is very weird for this area of the Wet Coast. Bit of a concern for river levels this
spring and summer if we don't get some soon. Anyway, the weather is warm and the water is too, so no need for the big rod and dredging lead core tips. I
have been fishing clear tips on my 7 wt rig with a rare 3 7/8" Taupo Perfect attached. Less than a dozen casts in, the reel just started up like (as
coined by a Speypages member) a Hardy-Davidson. A few seconds of this and a rather large steelhead leaped several yards upstream of where I thought he was.
After several big runs and a lot of thumb braking on the spool, I brought him to hand, and got this shot.
When I got home I met my young tenant, who had spent the afternoon hiking in to some pools far upstream. He was very excited and had had the best day of trout fishing in his life (he is only 22). He claimed to have hooked 30 trout to 4 lbs, none under 2 lbs basically on every cast with a dead drifted Squamish Poacher, which is a prawn fly. And yes, he was fishing a 3 5/8" Perfect. I imagine he has a few shots if he remembered his camera. I would have to say it was a Perfect day on Vancouver Island. |
